The contract is good as long as Neal plays with Geno.
Or he could end up next to Crosby and do even better #spoiledpensfan

Agreed. I'd be pretty shocked if the raises of Crosby, Malkin, and Staal costed more than 2 million.

Great signing by the Penguins.

The Dallas Stars now have a pretty good idea what Jamie Benn's next contract will look like.

James Neal signs 6 years, 5M per year. What a great price for someone who will be a perennial 40+ goal scorer playing with Malkin/Crosby.

The trade with Dallas was win-win since Goligoski is playing amazingly well too, but damn, Dallas already had a 25-30 goal scorer in Neal, and he was only going to get better... not sure if Goligoski is equivalent to his talent.

Now seeing the Pens signing Neal now makes me wish the Habs would be proactive in signing Pacioretty.

Yep, but when Martin gets off the books and they have Morrow & Despres coming in, it should be good.

Right. Letang's salary very well could nearly double.

Great deal for the Pens and Neal. That was about the minimum I thought he would get (Between $5-6 Million). Great to see he is going to be staying in Pittsburgh for 6 years. I thought he might take a bit of a discount, so I can't say I'm surprised by the $5 Million.

Yes! I was very pessimistic about this Neal contract situation, thinking he was going to ask for around 6-6.5. Great to hear we got him for 5.

Neal isn't a leach. He has an amazing shot, and playing with Malkin has enabled him to have the space needed to get that shot off. I dont care if he would only score 5 goals a year without Geno or Sid- if he can score 40 with them, hes worth every penny.

Who cares what he can do in a vacuum? We got him to play with one of our centers, and he is, and he's producing.

This is overpayment before this year. If he plays the way he did this year for the rest of the contract then it is fine.

I find it hard to believe that Crosby and Malkin are going to ask for a raise. They both love it in Pittsburgh and are probably going to sign long-term deals with a lower cap hit. I honestly don't believe that their cap hits are going to be more than 8 mil.

And that 1.4 mil should be enough to cover Staals raise.

When I look at Dubinsky's contract and compare it to Neal's new contract, I start breaking into tears.

He wasn't expendable in the slightest and he scored plenty without Richards.

Fantastic contract for both Neal and the Pens. Smart to get it done now.

I love having Shero as our GM. Is there a better GM at getting players to take discounts?

The Pens have, hands down, the best core locked up in the league (13-14 or later):
Malkin
Letang
Fleury
Kunitz
Martin
Orpik
Michalek
Engelland

And he'll have Sid and Staal locked up by this time next season too.

Staal will get something similar to Neal's deal but Sid's will stay the same. He's too superstitious to not have a 8.7M contract, plus with all his endorsements he isn't hurting for cash.
