This is fantastic news! And a major plus to Shero for doing things the right way. He refuses to cheat the system and do the front loaded contracts. I admire him for that.

By the by... I do believe this will inevitably send Martin packing before the end of his deal. They will want room for Letang, Staal, Crosby, Geno. (obviously)

Haha. I'll admit that every time he scored I was having the same thoughts.

Solid contract for both sides.

Just for future reference, you can't click on the link itself; just the box around it. I wasn't clear, my bad.

Martin would be gone before his deal is up because of who is coming up through the ranks. The contracts that are coming due are just salt on the wound.

Shero... i love what you do.
Totally agree... looks like we just got our "Patrick Sharp". Great goalscorer to pair with our playmakers who just happens to be locked up at a below-market cap hit.

I woke up because I got a text message. Turns out it was my Pens text alert about this. What fantastic news to wake up to!!!!
This is such a great deal considering all Neal has done this season. 6 more years of playing with Malkin... Scary.

True, I don't know, I just get the feeling that he'll be leaving sooner rather than later. Is it mathematically possible to keep him on the books? Sure, but is it practical? Well, that's another ball of wax entirely.

But in an effort to keep this train on the Neal tracks, I'll refrain from talking about Martin in this thread.

Just glad to see Neal locked down for the foreseeable future.

If he were performing at a consistent 5m/year level it wouldn't be a question of practicality.

With studs like Morrow and Despres, and risers like Bortuzzo in the pipeline it is difficult to say that he's worth it when he underperforms.

Huzzah!

Like most, would have liked to have kept it under $5mil, but the term makes up for it. Great job by GMRS, as usual.

Had no doubt this would get done, but nice to see it get out of the way.
He was going to take the 4.75/yr. Then his agent reminded him that he would then be making less per year than Paul"The Cone" Martin.

Good deal. I was worried he might try for the 6 range. If he continues to play like this he is a steal at that price.

Great news. I thought on the open market he would have gotten 6 mill., so I figured we would get him for 5.5 mill. So I am pleased to see he signed at 5 per.

1. Love the contract. I know a lot of people were hoping for a cap hit under 5M, but, if Neal had been an *** and gone to arbitration, he'd have gotten a two year deal and quite probably for a cap hit in the mid 5M range. That contract is a good, fair deal for both sides.

2. Agree about Shero, but if he wants to 'cheat' the system for Sid, Geno, Staal, Letang, or Fleury, I won't complain.
