He wouldn't have hit the open market as a RFA, but like you I was thinking that the Bobby Ryan deal from a few years ago, with a slight adjustment for escalating contracts, would be the bar . . . as you said, 5.5M.

Yea as the Cap ceiling rises. This is just the same as a 4.5M'ish contract. Great job by the Pens to get it done.

For those yelling for more wingers they need to see some of Shero's quotes on the signing. Basically says how hard it is to find good wingers today.

this is the longest deal Shero has ever signed a player to, correct?

that's kinda interesting.

this is a good deal overall, but i just hope he isn't playing this way because it's a contract year. he had a reputation in Dallas of being a bit greedy, iirc he was a holdout in one of their training camps because he wanted more money.

He gave Orpik 6 years and MAF 7 years.

even if he did, I feel like being traded across the country could be a very humbling experience for a kid in his early 20's. Players can change, especially young ones. By definition, nobody is born with much maturity

Well, of course it's hard to find good wingers today. Is your point to those yelling for more that the Pens have enough or to say 'it's not as easy as you think'?

Awesome signing. Considering what some guys got in free agency last year, $5mm for Neal is a good price, plus it carries him through his prime. I doubt we've seen his upper limit yet.

Just glad to see Neal locked down for the foreseeable future.
How isn't it practical? We have 4.6 million free with the cap staying at the same number. With that money we need to replace Matt Niskanen (or re-sign him), Richard Park, Aaron Asham, and Steve Sullivan.

I could very well see Ray keeping Martin until our core guys get their new deals, in which we'd be operating like the Hawks did in their Cup run. We'd have a bunch of guys playing on old deals, with new deals already signed, and we'd effectively be playing at an advantage over other clubs in that we are legally playing over the salary cap for our team.

When that situation comes to an end, Martin gets traded, and we use his space to pay for the raises of our core. The impractical thing is trading him before we have an heir apparent ready to take on 20+ mins a night.

So he doesn't use the word "winger" but I think he spells it out regardless.

I'm not discussing Martin any more in this thread. There's a whole thread already dedicated to that never-ending, non-winning debate.

I am very envious that you guys were able to re-sign James Neal that cheap and for that term. Congrats.

This is just great. The price is fine but the term is the real kicker.

If he signed a deal to just get him to ufa, he would get much more then. I don't think he's reached his peak value yet.

As I said to the girlfriend a few minutes ago....

You can't say or spell Shero without "hero."

Right on Ray

Exactly!! Hopefully we can let up on Martin a little bit and let Ray do his magic. When the time comes I have extreme confidence that RS will make the right moves.
