Dennis Wideman to NJ

Washington is currently in 9th in the Eastern Conference, but only 1 point behind 8th place. I think they'll most likely make the playoffs with the 7th/8th spot knocking out OTT or TOR with Ottawa I believe the most logical team missing the playoffs. Let's say **HYPOTHETICALLY** Washington completely tanks and by the time the deadline comes (I know the trade deadline is really close too), they legitimately can't make the playoffs. Wideman is the best defenseman option for the Devils to help their powerplay. Foster has made it better and we've only given up 1 SHG is a while, but he's a complete defense liability and isn't that great 5-on-5, but injuries force us to play him. He's a UFA at the end of the year and I don't know if Wash's GM is talking an extension for him, but with Green, Carlson, Alzner, and Orlov in the system I don't think Wideman will be back with them next year. What sort of deadline package would it take to get him to NJ? Foster will be useless to us if we acquired Wideman so preferably Foster would be going the other direction.

Wideman

for

Foster
2nd (NJ's 2nd, not WSH's that we acquired in Arnott trade)
+

What would need to be added?

This is almost laughably bad for Washington.

I think it would take a first round pick, and NJ can't move theirs.

Wideman is fouth in scoring for defenseman. A 2nd round pick gets you Hal Gill or Nicklas Grossman, not Wideman.

With the return Grossman and Kubina are getting I sort of want the Caps to sell Wideman. It would start with a 1st and take more though.

1st and a decent prospect will suffice.

Judging by the proposed values here, I'm hoping we stay away from Wideman.

At least a 1st and a prospect. He's an All Star, puck moving D. Hal Gill and Pavel Kubina commanded 2nd round picks; any trade discussions start with 1st round picks.

I really like Wideman but with Green healthy and the emergence of Orlov I think he's expendable. 3 1st round picks in this draft? Yes, please.

That I would consider. The Caps don't need young d. If we trade Wideman, then we need a vet d-man in the off-season.

And any comments saying he is expendable because Green is healthy? He played one game and we have no idea if he felt the effects of it after.

And if Merrill has to step in for Green are we just going to run a bunch of under 25s and an over the hill Hamrlik?
Alzner- Carlson
Orlov- Hamrlik
Merrill- Schultz

Bring on the Cup!

Caps may need a vet d-man in the off-season even if they don't trade him but lose him via free agency. In acquiring pieces and draft picks you may be acquiring currency that can be used to say trade with Columbus for the likes of Tyutin. Besides Caps have enough PMD, they need some defensive minded d-men.

I'd rather trade for Hamonic.

Parise, Hedberg for Hamonic, Grabner, Montoya

lol

If Wideman is getting traded, you'll have to outbid the other suitors. And given this sellers' market and weak crop of available defensemen, there will be other suitors.

If the Caps make Wideman available, there'll be a bidding war. He's far and away the best defenseman left of the market (if he's on the market), and there should be plenty of interest from Vancouver, Chicago, NY, and NJ. I really hope we're selling him at the deadline - seeing Kubina and Gill get 2nd + makes me think Wideman's price tag is going to be huge. Palmieri + 1st is a good offer, but who knows if another team could beat it. The price is definitely going to be 1st + decent prospect or elite prospect + mid range pick.

Wideman would be expensive a 1st and a prospect like Urbom or Gelinas.

No you can't have Merrill

Doubt Lou makes a move for him.
