Yes, its because he sucks at the defensive part of the game, which is kind of important when you are playing defense.

The Devils could certainly use some bottom 6th depth, but Ward's contract would not be the answer for that. If NJ wanted a forward from Washington, Halpern would be where they look. Cheap, PKs (although that isn't necessarily what they need) and takes great face-offs. He's precisely what NJ was hoping to get from Washington last year in David Steckel.

I don't know if the Devils really do need anybody for the bottom 6. If/When they are healthy, the bottom 6 will be:

Ponikarovsky-Zajac-Clarkson
Carter-Josefson-Bernier

That's pretty good.
