Not sure how you do this. No offense. I simply don't get how you can ever root for the Sabres to lose a hockey game.

Easy since the goal of this team is to win a Stanley, and obviously this year has 0% chance of that you look forward to the future of this team. The future involves drafting a number one center with the top 1-5 picks. To accomplish this we must lose the majority of games as we have been all season. Sign a few FA next season and were right back into the playoff talk, where we need to be to accomplish our goal...The Stanley Cup.

He can do it for the same reason that you walk into a dentist office knowing they're gonna stick a big friggin' needle into your gums: In the long run, you benefit. It's about the end justifies the means, and if the "means" is the Sabres losing a lot of games to finish out the season to get a potential franchise player, then you bite the bullet and hope they lose. I know it goes against emotion, but finishing 9th-12th is nowhereville. For that matter, finishing ANYWHERE above 13th would be a problem, because even if they got into the playoffs, they'd be creamed by many teams, including the one they just beat 6-2. How about them apples?

If you want a Cup, the core HAS to be changed...and Darcy won't do squat unless he is up against a WALL!

Do you root for your child to fail because they'll learn a lesson, and then get mad when they succeed ?

Bad analogy.

Doing poorly in school DOES NOT result in you getting a better brain in a school draft.

Good:
-Pominville made things happen. Outstanding game by the captain.
-Roy with one of his best games of the season
-Ehrhoff, as someone said, being silky smooth
-GGK buzzing
-Not falling apart after the Pens scored the 3-2
-Didn't notice Ennis in the defensive zone. Which I guess is a good thing.

Bad:
-Jordan Leopold on PP1
-#2 PP unit wasn't any better. Still, at least one of Ehrhoff/Myers should be on the 1st PP unit over Leopold.
-Odd men rushes early in the game
-2nd line was invisible for most of the game

Ugly:
-Nothing

I don't see it that way. I think losing has a lasting effect. One the other team remembers one the current players remember.

Pittsburgh and Chicago liked the lasting effect of losing plenty.

Now that is moving the goalposts pretty hardcore, and I really don't care enough about this to argue.

Lose a battle to win the war. It's about long-term vision.

So did Detroit... oh wait. And Pittsburgh got a good bit of luck to go with that scenario. How has it worked for Edmonton?

If the Sabres get a high draft pick, all fine and dandy. However, I will never root for them to lose or be even slightly mad if they win. Each to their own I guess.

Yeah, sure. You can root for more mediocrity, don't bother me none

Or about pulling for a scenario that has no guarantee for success whatsoever. Pull for them to lose if you want, but it might very well not work out as well as some of you think. In fact, the odds are pretty good it won't.

Ahh, like that one. If I don't agree with you, I prefer mediocrity. Not much logic there.

How many people "hope" for or "rejoice" in a lost battle?

The whole idea of tanking is absurd.

Name me a great NHL player who wasn't acquired by his current team through the draft, and I'll name you ten who were. It's not rocket science. It's no guarantee, either, but you don't get championships by waiting for teams to let go of their championship-caliber players.

It's alright, I know it sucks to root for the team to lose. I know it's counter-intuitive and not fun. But I also know it's got the highest probability of leading to us winning championships in the future.

Of course you don't prefer mediocrity. You're just rooting for results that are more likely to lead to mediocrity.

Lots of times, losing the battle also means losing the war.
