The Isles have to make a decision on whether or not to trade Nabokov in exactly a week and contract talks haven't started yet? Oh yeah...This sounds like both sides want a deal to happen.
I'm calling BS on this times a million. Nabokov doesn't want to stay in LI. This has to be Meehan doing the Isles/Snow a favor and thus helping out his client by hopefully driving Nabby's price up so that Snow is in a better position to deal him.
It also tells me that the trade market for Nabokov is lackluster at best. We've got a guy who prefers to play for a real contender and a trade market that doesn't want him. This is not a good recipe for the Isles.
I will stand by this...Nabokov is NOT going to be an Islander come October.
Wow, I wasn't expecting this. If it's true and he really wants to re-sign with us, then get his signature on a contract quick!
I love Nabby's old school style, such a throwback and a dying breed. I haven't felt this comfortable with a goalie since the Osgood days. 2 year deal would probably be ideal.
good news, hope they sign him a one-year extension (no more, Poulin will be ready by then)
My guess is only way Nabakov signs with us would be like a 3-4 year deal. He is at that point in his life that he most likely either wants to play for a Stanley Cup Contender or some stability(and since we can't provide him the first with a one year deal.....).

Totally agree with this. We need this guy to help us develop our young defense. Hamonic, Ness, CdH and Donovan need all the help they can get.
5% - The chance it is legitimate.
On the surface there is the obvious meaning to extract from this, that Nabster is on board with the team, feels somewhat at home, and likely expects a big payday. It also means a meaningful change has occurred between Wang & Snow because it clearly puts Rickety on solid ice. Do I want all of the above to be true? Hell Efing yes times a million. It would also mean that they somehow convinced him it's worth staying, which I expect would mean they unveiled their plan to acquire real talent via ufa and trades. There is so much "not likely" in the above that I have to call this 5% possible.
95% - The chance it is utter crap.
My money is on this at the moment, because like Periferal stated, why not work things out earlier. More likely is that they want to push his value through the roof by putting even more pressure on suitors with the perception they might retain him. The only problem with that is the history involved where he refused to report, then came here with much hassle.
I don't want to rain on some of your happy-parades, but this announcement, now, seems pretty self serving of the Islanders front office. Regardless, my hope is it is still true because it would be a sea change in our hopes for next year.
IF Nabby is resigned then I think Montoya is gone. We would go with Nabby and Poulin as our 1 and 2, and DP as the distraction until he pulls his groin getting out of his car.
I'm not sure if I believe this or not. It would be great if we could resign him but I'm not going to get excited until there is something more definitive.
I wonder what the cap will be like next year. Not salaries but cap hits have Tavares getting a 1.75 bump, Nielsen a 2.25 bump, Martin will likely get a bump and the D will need a make over with only Streit, Amac and Hamonic signed on, not including prospects like Ness, CDH and Donovan. PAP will likely have a large raise.
What I'm trying to say is I don't know how much cap space is going to be left.
A fair deal to me would be a 2 year deal worth 8 million.

Those are the exact numbers that popped into my head when I read about the negotiations.
Snow, who declined comment on any current or future contract talks but did reiterate that he has no plans to trade Nabokov before next Monday's deadline, appears to envision Nabokov next season teaming with 21-year-old Kevin Poulin, who made 33 saves in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Hurricanes and will likely get the call in goal today.
"Now, a lot of people said, last season, the reason I didn't come here is because it's a bad organization. That's not true. I didn't come because I didn't think I was ready. I came to training camp ready to go, and I think it's been good."
I wouldn't have considered for a second that Nabby would consider signing here, but this news seems to suggest quite the opposite. It's a fit for both sides.
i tend to agree with all those calling "bullturd. why start now?"
but on the flip side, if I (and others on HFBOARDS) can spot a phoney, wouldn't a GM who's interested in Nabby also be able to? and if so, wouldn't Snow know that? Wouldn't Meehan? Of course... Which makes me think there's a slight chance that this thing might have lizard legs.

Not including Jurcina, Pap, Montoya, wallace and maybe a reasoner buyout we are shedding over 12M in dead weight salary next year which may be filled by youth:
rolston 5M
pandolfo 1.4m
eaton 2.5M
staios 1.6M
mottau 800K
witt 833K (last year of buyout)
Jurcina could be an additional 1.6M off the books if not resigned
Ness and Donovan will only be 900K hits if they make it and CDH is $1.5M.... If strome(1.8M) makes team and Pap gets resigned it may eat into it somewhat. I think we can afford $4M a year for Nabby for 2 years
So I think that we we'll need to add actually add some salary to make floor..there should be room.

by far the best thing about any of this- bs or not- would be that someone is admitting that the idea of DP being the starting goaltender of the future is finished.
if Nabby's signed, you can bet it won't be to be a backup....
if he's not signed, which is more likely, you can still bet that DP is listening and (hopefully) reading the writing on the wall....

There has been talk of a temporary cap of 69 million before the CBA is done so the cap and cap floor should both go up. With all the fiscally responsible long term contracts, the Isles have a buttload of cap space just to get to the cap floor next year. It's fascinating how creative the organization is in money saving moves.
Cue the 'Wang is cheap' and 'Wang must sell' responses.
