Forget imagining just not having Sykora. Imagine it being Rolston instead! With any luck that wasn't as good as him being shipped to the Island to begin with he might be waived, and in Albany again this year like he was twice last year.
Yes I hate Rolston, and stop at nothing to bash him. I don't hate him personally really, but that contract should never have happened.

Dude was also USELESS when Lemaire wasn't here.
It's terrible that the guy earned $15m and has played worse then a guy who will earn $650k. Kinda pisses me off too.
And has effectively solidified the 2nd line. Imagine this team without Sykora (just imagine the lines, we'd probably would have never seen the Parise-Henrique-Kovalchuk line)
Having him in the top 6 definitely helps. Our RW depth would be a lot worse without him.

Part of me still don't trust Lou after that contract. I think he took a trip to Mars with the one. WAY TOO OLD for that long of a contract, and that money. I know I know someone else would have given him more. We were the suckers stuck with him for years. He had the best part of his career right before he got to Jersey so he was worth some joke of a salary. Don't get me wrong I loved him back in the day. I even was kinda upset when he was scratched for most of the 95 playoffs. Probably cause Valerie Zelepukin came back. Guy had a hell of a slap shot. He played good when we turned it around with Jacques last year, but that was all I could think of positive from him his second time around in Jersey.
It sucks cause Gionta could have gotten that salary the next year. People say Gionta isn't worth what he's getting now in Montreal. He got$5 million a year there, and Rolston was too. Gionta isn't worth it, but Rolston was even with his contract that didn't end until he was eligible for social security?
Only positive about losing Gionta was we probably couldn't get Kovalchuk if we had him or have a chance to re sign Zach this Summer.

Yeah I kinda don't trust Lou after that crap.
Well I think Lou is really reluctant to sign old players now. He barely let Sykora sign for a 1 year deal. The old Lou would have signed Sykora to a 5 year 5m deal after the first preseason game.
Question, do you think Sykora will be in a devils jersey next season? Personally I would love for him to resign with cheap one year deal. His scoring depth would really help this team if the younger players cannot contribute offensively at a pace they are expected to, such as this year with Tedenby and Palmieri. Though since Sykora wouldn't be signed for near league minimum next year, what do you think Sykora could fetch salary wise? I could see a hand full of teams somewhat over pay Petr to reach the cap floor (Islanders come to mind.)

1 yr 1m
He's earned it.
I doubt he'll sign elsewhere, he'll retire if the Devils choose not to bring him back.
He has been performing well above his pay, which is the best I could have hoped for. I honestly hope this isn't his last season, either, as long as he can keep up the pace he has set so far.

I think he will come back. Something like 1 year $1 M is perfectly fine by me.
If he comes back next season it should be no more than a 1 year deal and absolutely no more than 1 mil. I like him, but he needs very specific circumstances to be effective. I.E., Elias. If Elias got hurt or something, Sykora becomes kinda useless. He is also so, so slow its sometimes painful to watch.
All that said, I have enjoyed watching him again and am frankly amazed at how he and Elias could basically pick up right where they left off. And while he may have lost 34563 steps, he still has dat shot.

Hands are always the last thing to go. He's not as fast as he once was, but he can still bring it.
Im with RG with this one, though he may stick around for another season. I still think about that goal in '08 against Detroit if a question comes up regarding his recent effectiveness.
I think Sykora retires after going out on top kissing the cup myself...
(of course he came back after I sold my authentic jersey)
I think that even if he does kiss the cup(if we win it), he will come back not only next year but the year after and the year after(providing he continues to be effective).
IMO, until Elias calls it a Career, I believe Sykie would want to stick around with him.
