Sweet young package for 2nd overall

I'm trying to gauge the value of the second overall pick to a team that needs a player like Grigs to truly be a contender (LA, Nashville) on draft day.

2nd Overall pick

Bernier
Voynov
1st

or

2nd Overall pick
Value filler prospect

Lindback
Ellis
1st

Those are both pretty terrible for Edmonton. It makes much more sense for the Oilers to just trade back a couple spots (with Buffalo or someone else), pick up some assets and take one of the defenseman (Murray) than to move the pick for that kind of package.

The last few no.2 picks have been E. Staal, Malkin, Bobby Ryan, J. Staal, JVR, Doughty, Hedman, and Seguin.

Now ask yourself again if those packages would be worth that general class of player (JVR being the one weak link, but the rest ... forget about it).

Why would any contending team make this type of deal now? I could see MAYBE in the offseason, but there is no reason for a contender to make that type of move right now.

First off - no one would do something like this until the lottery is figured out.

Second - a second overall is going to be worth more than you're showing here.

Say Montreal ends up with the 5th overall, what would they need to add to their 1st to get that 2nd pick?

I guess I would be willing to offer Tinordi or Beaulieu, even though that sure seems like a steep price.

why do you bother asking, you know they will say Subban, patches or price...

oh and I would not give up Tinordi. Beaulieu could work cause The Habs already have puck movers...

The Oilers have similar young players to Tinordi in Smid, Kelfbom, Musil, Teubert, and Plante. Also the same goes with Beaulieu with Petry, Marincin, Gernat, Blain, and Davidson. I really dont think Edmonton will be looking to add another average defensive prospect.
Trading down from the top two does not usually work out very well for teams. Hemsky could be walking this off season, and they have a lot of one way contracts for defenseman next season. So, they would be better off drafting Grigorenko.

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Paajarvi-Grigorenko-Gagner
Smyth-Horcoff-Jones
Lander-Belanger-Eager

Whitney-Gilbert
Smid-Petry
Sutton-Potter .....12-13 is going to be another long year

EDM gets:
Pysyk
Brennan
3rd 2013
4th overall

for

BUF gets:
2nd overall
filler LW/C prospect

OR

EDM gets:
Subban
5th overall
Aaron Palushaj

MTL gets:
2nd overall

I don't know if EDM would trade out of top 5. And if they did trade down a few spots it would have to be for a killer deal.

Come on, Pacioretty has played like an all-star in the last few months. Grigorenko wouldn't replace his production for a few years (and would likely never replace his goal scoring) and Dubnyk is trash compared to Price.

I wouldn't do Price OR Pacioretty for Grigs, let alone both of them together.

Beaulieu average prospect? Well I guess if you're happy with the likes of Petry, Marincin & co there isn't much I can add to this conversation.
