If I'm Columbus, I trade Nash for impact prospects or young players who are as close to the NHL as possible. So while I can't speak for Howson, the Columbus fan base wouldn't accept that deal. They would want to keep a guy like Schenn anyways. None of those pieces are impact players or prospects.

Chicago on the other hand, getting Schenn and Vermette (is he a UFA?) but losing essentially 4 prospects and losing that depth isn't exactly that great for them and I would bet they wouldn't do that deal. Getting Schenn is a nice piece but Vermette could probably be had for cheaper at the deadline if he is a UFA.

Toronto likes it from their end.

Toronto makes out the best in the deal. They give up the 2 biggest underachievers at the moment and get the best player in the deal.

I wouldn't do that from the Hawks perspective.

Vermette is not UFA - he is signed for three more years after this at $3.75M cap hit.

Toronto get the best player in the deal - no doubt.

Chicago gets exactly what they need - a #2C that is good at faceoffs and plays PP & PK, and a physical top-4 d-man.

Columbus - if they trade Nash pretty much means they are in rebuild mode. So, they get Toronto's best center prospect, Chicago's two best center prospects, one of Chicago's best winger prospects and 1st & 2nd 2012 draft picks. In addition, Kadri, Pirri, and Morin have all played a few NHL games and are close to NHL ready.

One of the more creative, and IMO better proposals for Nash out there. Maybe drop a Chicago prospect and have the Leafs include another prospect.

Toronto obviously does this.

Chicago gets the much needed #2C and top 4 stay-at-home defenceman, both who come with long term cost control, and the latter with youth upside.

The Jackets trade 2 guys who probably aren't part of the long term plans, and get 5 really good assets, including Kadri & Pirri who could step into the lineup right away.

I think the biggest problem comes from Columbus not being able to land a defenceman or goaltender in this deal though.

Hawks trade their 3 best prospects, a 1st and a 2nd, and all we get is Vermette and Schenn?

We could get dozens of better deals if the Hawks are giving that stuff up

I don't think any of the 3 teams do this trade. As a Hawks fan I especially say no thanks.

I agree Toronto makes out nicely but how are Kadri and Schenn any worse underachievers than Nash at the moment?

Too much from Chicago and not enough from Toronto.

Toronto: Schenn, Kadri, Grabovski, 1st (2012) for Nash.
Chicago: McNeill, Pirri, 2nd (2012) for Schenn and Grabovski.
Columbus: Nash for Kadri, Pirri, McNeill, 1st (2012), 2nd (2012).

That's what I noticed too. 3 centers and a 1st and a 2nd. Decent center prospects, but none of the 3 are elite players at all.

Oh look, Toronto is trading two firsts and a second, for an impact winger. AGAIN.

Try selling Kings fans on that one.

Well, Kadri's a winger, and him / McNeil are about as "elite" as true prospects go these days.

The real problem is -- defencemen generally take longer to develop. While they now have an extra first rounder with which to draft a blueliner, the chances of that player making an impact any time in the next 3-4 years is highly unlikely, whereas Kadri & Yakupov/Grigorenko would be virtual locks for the team on a full time basis next year, with a decent chance of McNeil / Pirri being able to play as well. Factor in Ryan Johanssen as well, and they really do need a defenceman.

My suggestion for a revised trade:

To Chicago: Vermette, Schenn
To Toronto: Nash
To Columbus: Nazem Kadri, Mark McNeil, Jeremy Morin, Korbinian Holzer, Toronto 1st, Chicago 2nd.

Alternatively....

To Chicago: Grabovski, Schenn
To Toronto: Nash
To Columbus: Chicago 1st, Morin, Dylan Olsen, Nazem Kadri, Korbinian Holzer

Doesn't help the goaltender situation, but doesn't cost them Vermette and does get them 2 defencemen who can play next year. Maybe Toronto removes Kadri, and instead sends MacArthur to another team for a goaltender who gets flipped to Columbus. Convoluted, but does solve everyone's needs.

-Toronto gets one of the best big wingers in the game, losing Schenn, MacArthur, Grabovski & Holzer
-Chicago gets the best rental centre available to fill the #2 spot, and a young top 4 physical defenceman with cost control, who fits nicely with Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson and Leddy, while only giving up picks / prospects.
-Columbus gets 2 young defenceman (Olsen & Holzer), young goaltender (TBD), a high potential winger (Morin), and a 1st round pick while dropping $7.8m in Rick Nash's salary. Not a bad kick-in-the-butt for the rebuild.

I was going to flame this but the more I look it's not THAT bad. Chicago gives up too much and Toronto not quite enough.

Maybe the Leafs add a good D prospect to the Jackets instead of the 2nd and Chicago sends a 3rd to the Leafs instead of Pirri to the Jackets.

Nash, Vermette for Kadri, McNeill, Morin, D-man, 1st.
Schenn, Kadri, D-man for Nash, 3rd
McNeill, Morin, 1st, 3rd for Schenn, Vermette.

(problems?) Chicago loses (arguably) their best 2 prospects and a 1st.
(positives?) They do gain big time for right now.

(Prob) Toronto loses a 2nd pair D-man and D prospect
(POS) D is a position of strength, up front all they lose is Kadri for Nash

(Prob) Jackets lose face of franchise
(POS) They need a remake and this stacks them.

Nutshell, Chicago overpays but they can handle it. If Leafs can resign Grabo and any C prospect comes through they become a solid team with 2 lines that can hurt you. Columbus gets Fing stocked.

.

Wow..Chicago gives up a ton. And they still don't have a no. 1 goalie. Great return for Columbus though. Don't know if the Hawks would want to boost their divisional rival so much. But this would be ideal for what Howson has to do.
