Give up assets for Rick Nash or sign Zach Parise?

Which option do you think is more beneficial to the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Trading assets (3-4 key pieces) and taking on Rick Nash and his $7.8M cap hit OR keeping the assets and making a serious run at possible UFA (unrestricted free agent) Zach Parise?

Parise has had some bad injury issues over the last couple seasons but he's still one of the best forwards in the game when healthy. He's also unquestionably an top #1 centre which is the position we desperately are looking to fill. But there are two issues with the possibility of signing Parise. The first is whether or not he can bounce back and play to the level that he did prior to the serious injuries and whether or not he's even at the same level as Rick Nash at this time. The second issue is that you're going to have to wait until July 1st to find out if Parise even makes it to free agency and doesn't sign an extension with the New Jersey Devils. It's a risk.

Long story short:

Would you rather Burke trade for Nash or make a run at Parise?

Pretty sure Zach Parise said he wanted to win and win now. So if he leaves NJ he's going to a BETTER team than NJ. Not Toronto.

We're not getting any high profile UFA's unless Burke starts handing out those retirement contracts or the next CBA closes that loophole of front loaded retirement contracts.

Also, Zach Parise is a winger. 99% sure that Henrique centers Parise and Kovalchuk

Probably Parise; if not then it's not a big deal. Neither are serious needs; they're more like shiny toys. Our holes are not on the wing.

Signing Parise could be easier said then done, same with Brad Richards last summer. It looks really good in theory but who knows if he even wants to play here? If I could choose between Nash and Parise, I would go with Parise in a heartbeat. But from what I've read, Nash has put the Leafs on a short list of teams that he would like to join. That's a lot more concrete then holding out for Parise who may or may not want to come here.

Parise is capable of playing centre.

Stupid choices... if you can get Parise for cap space alone; you do it.

However, as we witnessed last year, the player has to want to play for your team.

Who knows if Parise wants to sign here? If we trade for Nash, we have him for the next 6 seasons. If we don't, we take our chances and hope Parise chooses us. By passing up Nash because we want to go for Parise, we run the risk of getting no one.

I believe the best option is to get the player you can, when you can (of it makes sense in terms of assets and cap).

Parise will resign in nj there's no reason for him not to. I could actually see the devils making the ECF this year.

No they wouldn't.

It would be a bigger public relations disaster moving Kovalchuk than just letting Parise walk.

And nobody will take on Kovalchuk's contract.
