will HF is one of the most 40 most trafficated forums in the internetz http://rankings.big-boards.com/?p=2 ;just in case anyone didn't know
and it appears to be the most active sports forum, so I sort of understand why it's being used
lmfao Anime role playing forum #1.. haha oh god how I fear for humanity.
I just thought he meant he doesn't want people to notice him being black-but just as a normal great hockey player. But somehow he said he wants to be a role model for minorities. How could you do both at the same time?
Come on dude. He doesn't want to be given special treatment for being African-American. Meaning he doesn't want people to go out of their way to be politically correct, but he doesn't want to be treated unfairly. He wants to be one of the guys, but he also wants to be a role model for minorities. How can you misconstrue that?

Sorry, he said "other ethnic backgrounds" which means not white.

I wasn't trying to make a big deal out of this. I just thought it stuck out to me.

No he said this:
Quote:
Subban: "Everyone is going to have an opinion on what I'm being scrutinized for. There have been a lot of black players in the NHL. I don't want to be noticed for that -- I want to be noticed as being a good hockey player who can have a positive impact on his team. I hope to be a role model for kids of different ethnic backgrounds who want to play hockey."
He doesn't say anything about minorities. The ethnic majority is still an ethnic background. Different implies not the same. It has nothing to do with minorities.
I think the issue is how much scrutiny he gets. I don't think its racially motivatied so much as he is a young star playing in a large market. He also doesn't have the average milquetoast interview personality of most NHLers.
Look at this thread for instance and look at the criticism he's gotten on his answers. Ethnic backgrounds, dissing Anaheim, he seems to just rub people the wrong way, even when its totally unwarranted.
In that case, wouldn't calling any city a 'small market' team be insulting? I mean who are they to judge the team's support and media following.
I don't see the parallel. Some markets are big, some are small. It's a fact of life.
But saying "nobody cares about [team]" is just not a smart thing when speaking to a reporter. Whether it's true or not, a pro athlete should know better than to say something like that.

Why. Why does everyone have to watch what they say in front of the media. I see it as an attack against media bias and I'm strongly in favor of his views.
As another poster said, stop being mad on our behalf.
HF board discussions are just bizarre sometimes. I'm waiting for the discussion to evolve into "Subban hates non-ethnic minorities" and has a problem with Disney, hence the cheap shot against Anaheim by the time this thread hits 8 pages.

Reason: ESPN might quote me.
I don't get how people think he's taking a shot on Anaheim, I'm sure it's pretty true, people wouldn't care about them that much compared to the Angels or other sports franchises.

Who's mad? I'm talking about PK Subban, not the Ducks. He could have said the Vancouver Grizzlies for all I care.

Oh and since someone at ESPN is definitely reading this thread, please pass on to the rest of your co-workers/management that we'd rather pretend that a hockey skate blade is a lolipop or wrist watch than seek hockey info from you.
: laugh:
forever laughing.
as long as you don't ACTUALLY believe it's a cheap shot. Honestly, I don't even really like Subban all that much, so I'm not defending him out of fan bias. I legitimately think he's dead on.
His answers are dumb. First of all, he doesnt hit with his keister he hits with his back. Which is both cowardly and he is gonna give himself whiplash one day, so thats just dumb. And he didnt see Ference coming and didnt get a chance to take his gloves off? Lol...thanks Subban, I havent laughed like that in a long time.

Except that he isn't African-American. He's not even American, or African.
He's a black Canadian. And I'm darn proud of him, and of my country for not using a strange an illogical appellation to designate black peoples.

Subban: "This is obviously coming from a Bruins fan"

N' Please?
Marchand is a coward clipping people, and an hypocrit person to say the least.
Kronwall hit a lot with his back, so are other players in the leage. Why the **** it bothers you that much? Oh yeah, Bruins fan ...

Lol and then Canadian's (and Mexicans) get mad when people from USA are called Americans because technically everyone on the continent is American. You're right, but...is it really that big a deal? He's a black Canadian. He's black. He wants to be a role model to kids in other ethnic groups. That's the main idea here.
"Nobody cares what's going on in [Anaheim's] practices"
Way to draw respect for yourself.
Give me a break. We all know he wasn't saying Anaheim sucks. He was saying that they don't live under a microscope. You can walk up to players after practice in Anaheim and get a picture taken, but in Montreal you have to rush away from Brossard because if you stay to sign autographs, you'll never get away.
Just look at 25stanley. Basically gossip about the players personal lives.
