Edmonton Capitals Suspend Operations

I went to a few games last year when I was in town and this makes me sad

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/ml...pend-play.html

the other teams would not commit to the season

Haven't really been into baseball in Edmonton since the Trappers left. This seemed inevitable.

Man you gotta love that travel itinerary as a player, if not an owner.

I think the team was successful last season. It just isn't possible for them to be successful this season if they have to play in a division that only has teams in Hawaii, California and Arizona.

I can't imagine flying the entire team to Maui several times a year is easy on the team's possible revenue.

That being said, I happened to be in Maui last year when the Capitals were playing there, was quite a cool and unique experience.

it wasn't a lack of success for the capitals...decent attendance and a championship last year...it's the league they were a part of. It apparently only had 4 teams prepared for the year, and the travel and everything would have been pretty brutal. The operations are just suspended until a better situation is found.

Gregor just had a solid interview with laForge on the issue.

Too bad. I can't blame them in the least though. The travel is a killer!

I do miss the Trappers though for the same reason I like the Oil Kings.

Even if it isn't the big show, you will see some glimpses of greatness pass through town.

The Capitals, although entertaining, just weren't the same.

Laforge sounded quite confident that it would be a one year suspension and that there are options.

While they were no Edmonton Trappers, the Caps were great for what they were: an affordable, relatively entertaining way to spend a summer afternoon or evening. You still can't beat the food and beer combos they had. It will leave a noticeable void for me this summer.

I hope pro baseball returns to Edmonton in one form or another. That's a great ballpark and it would be a shame to see it sit empty.

I'd love to see the lease agreement between the city and the oilers on this one. City owned facility that they were forced to renegotiate the lease before the oilers would buy. LaForge was quite cavelier when he said they'd be keeping the lease as if it wesa no problem at all. Probably a long term lease for a dollar a year or something along those lines and a fine example of why I was against the city owning the new rink.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_League I think if Calgary could get a single A team, Edmonton could get a team with better support system in place then the league they are in. The problem started with the crazy woman and her husband who treates baseball in Edmonton like it was a loony bin.

-I know Ft. McMurray is getting a team next year, but I am not sure which league it is supposed to be in. I think it was supposed to be in the same league as the Capitals though, because I remember that Maui team as being told they were being in their division.

Yup, same league as the Capitals, just checked it out...And apparently they are supposed to start this season....Interesting. I might have to check out a few ball games this summer.

This might be a blessing in desguise, at best the NABL was below bush league, and this could either mean a return of affiliated baseball in Edmonton, or joining a legitimate Indy leage like the American Association.

Plus there are still good summer options out there, the Edmonton Prospects in the WMBL is a good summer collegiate baseball team , and the FC Edmonton are picking up steam.

I think the Pioneer League would be a better fit geographically:

Laforge said they could return back to the same league next year as well. He also talked about a potential new Canadian league amongst other things.

What exactly is the prospects I never heard of them until yesterday.

I was quite impressed with just how good the ball was. I thought it was going to be a level above what we played in high school gym class, but it was a lot better than I expected.

I think this move just proves what a joke that league was.

I meant inevitable in the sense that geographically, it didn't make sense. I went to a few games last season; they were an OK value for what they provided, but not great by any means.
