If he did, they wouldn't have fought. He talked to Clarkson, then tried to surprise him with punch. He knew was going to fight him eventually. Call it an unwritten rule that Phaneuf ignored (and he's not the first). Like I said, not a huge deal at this point, but he'd sure look better if he took it off.
Started IS the right word.

He skated up to him while Phaneuf was alone in his end, and started pushing him around, i.e, challenging him. To me, there's no other way to put it, Clarkson started that fight. No, he did not jump him, or throw the first punch (agreed about Phaneuf throwing the first one, which happens all the time), but he still started it.

Would he look better fighting without a visor? Absolutely, I wish he would, but he's not required to. Like I said before, his own teammate, Colton Orr, was badly injured to the point that his career was in serious question because he had his head slammed into the ice after a fight. It can be dangerous to fight without a helmet, and I don't blame Dion for keeping his on.

A guy like Phaneuf needs the same treatment as Torres,Lapierre etc just start hammering him.

so you want the Leafs captain, #1 defenseman to take off his helmet and risk concussion just to fight a scrub?

You're not sure why a team would want to protect its best players from even legal heavy physical contact? Watching hockey long?

We're agreeing with one another. Phaneuf knew he was going to fight, had plenty of time to take off his visor, and chose not to.

And he threw the first punch, in essence 'starting' the fight.

Are you serious right now? If you fear concussions you shouldn't fight at all, helmet or not.

I hate players who fight with Visors, but this wasn't phaneuf's fault.. he kinda got forced into that fight from what I'm being told.

Is that what happened?

Lets not forget Phaneuf also got an instigator and Foligno actually got a penalty on the hit. But thanks for adding nothing really to the discussion...

Yeah he was forced into it. Not really his fault. I have no problem at all with the sequence of events that occurred. There are some homers from both sides in this thread

fyi Phaneuf isn't the first player to fight with a visor and won't be that last, And it's not like he had enough time to take it off, Clarkson pretty well came up and grabbed in. Quit your *****ing NJ fans.
How about that Bolton check on Boyce? It was right on his #'s and you don't see any leaf fans whining about it.

Everbody look at the way Phaneuf's head slammed into the ice, then come back and say if he should have taken his helmet off.

Yep, things like this happen.

No helmet? He could have gotten hurt on that.
