Not giving up on him, but I'm not elevating him to the top tier like many are. People just don't want to admit that we possibly didn't get what we should have for Halak. I just don't get the love at this point.

Personally I think Eller has a lot of untapped offensive potential - the fact is when Plekanec and Desharnais were 22, the former was written off as a 3rd line C at best and the latter wasn't even considered a potential NHL player.

Perhaps Eller will never be more than a 3rd C. But the potential to be more is there, and even if the worst happens, if anything games like this show the importance of defensively sound Cs, unless you want to see that dream Desharnais-Gomez tandem continue.

I'll give you this much. But great players aren't always built on potential

Remember the 2007 draft folks...in early February of his draft year Cherepanov and Esposito were still considered 1-2 ..by draft day they were both out of the top 15 because they weren't showing the effort teams want in a top ten pick.

you also have to factor in the KHL - it will always beckon the moment there might be adversity, and signs are pointing towards Grigorenko being a player who disappears in big games. If that happens at the NHL level he will eventually fall out of favour with his coaches no matter how talented his is - happened to Radulov, happened to Filatov, happened to Svitov, happened to Chistov..... they all fled. Semin and Ovechkin have fallen out of favour with coaches..Ovechkin is more interested in being a celebrity than a winner.

Dont think that all of this isn't lost on NHL executives. Not many teams can afford to blow a top ten pick on a player with other options.
This has worried me as well. This is why I have favoured Galchenyuk over him. I think Galchenyuk is probably a more complete player in terms of offensive potential and defensive awareness. We'll see soon enough how well the knee holds up...but I'm very confident it will.

What changes now, even for me, is that even if we're filled with great quality d-men prospects, it is entirely possible that I would be tempted by Trouba or a few others BEFORE i'd like at Grigo. But my mind isn't made yet. But if Galchenyuk would have played this year, I would be real CLEAR for everybody that he should be a consensus #2.
You know it personally? Well that's a load off my mind.

Speaking of Galchenyuk, is there any chance there has been any inside conversation with Nathan Beaulieu's dad regarding Alex's progress with the knee injury? Or does it really matter since he's just going to play soon anyway and everyone will see for themselves?

You should read the Boucher scouting topic here, he's already good but not getting put in the situation all those high scoring young players are.

Personally, and it's gonna sound kind of weird as a comparision, but he kind of reminds me of a less precocious foward version of Subban. Not everything but they do have a lot of strenghts in common. Two-way, projects as tough minutes guy (Subban is already there but Subbans aren't exactly common),good puck protection skills, big part of their games are about puck possession more so than pure passing skills... the penalties.
