The "Why does Adam Oates have a Job?" Thread

I mean what the hell is he good for?

Our Powerplay is ass.

It's almost always set up wrong, with the wrong players at the wrong positions....

We hardly see ANY movement....

And before anyone brings up the Kovy Goal, that only happened because the Devils decided to act like it was still 5-on-5 on that break instead of backing out and setting the whole mess up.

I sometimes think that Adam Oates was only hired because Lou thought his PLAYING ABILITY from way back when would actually rub off on the Devils or something....

i was so excited when i read he was hired. hes managed to **** up a great pp idea(with the bolts/having stamkos...in this case kovy at the circle.) and those faceoffs he was oh so good at, even a little bit of his methods couldve been gleaned by the centers....and i think theyd prob be better off using their own method.

I have to think something else is going on here. Oates did a lot of work on faceoffs last year and it seemed to pay off on the stretch. I also remember a bunch of timeouts called with a late PP where he would draw up some plays and then we would score.

Is there some sorta DeBoer/Barr groupthink going on and Oates isn't having a say like he used to? I think it's a little silly to discount the kinda success he had working the powerplay in Tampa. I feel like someone told him the Devils were looking for a simple powerplay setup in order to avoid...I dunno, overthinking? Something doesn't add up.

The PP goal was not with our usual set up, it was on the rush after a broken play. Unless I'm much mistaken, we haven't scored a PP goal with our usual set up in quite a while. Teams cheat toward Kovy's shot, Parise's stuff play never works, Clarkson rarely gets to rebounds, and Foster's shot isn't accurate.

Have to try something else, but someone in the coaching staff is stubbornly clinging to the same idea that never works.

EXACTLY. How are the other teams Powerplays working and ours isn't? Because they have MOVEMENT and they don't pigeon-hole particular players in the same positions every damn PP-time.

See Saugus response above.

And bringing up Faceoffs won to defend Oates is really silly. What about the other games this season where we lost the Faceoff battle?

LOL @ TIMING

maybe that didn't sink in - it's IRONIC to create this thread citing lack of PP and faceoffs on the heels of one of the only times we've both A) scored a PP goal and B) won the faceoff category

Didn't say anything about the merits of the thread.

Jesus you'd think we lost last night.

I don't like him either, but we've moved up a little bit in PP ranks, and haven't given up a shorthanded goal in a month. I'm cutting him a bit of a break now compared to the past. I wanted him gone more than anyone from about the beginning of December until the middle of January. So bad people were telling me ''How do you know what he does? It's ridiculous to criticize assistant coaches cause we don't know what's going on'' It's funny some of the same people who said that are now saying he needs to go also.

Just like when I said Marty's play was bad his first few games in November, and people told me I was wrong, and had no right to criticize him. The same people started to complain if he gave up one bad goal on 41 shots even when we won the game. Now I don't think he's doing that bad, but a lot of people do.

Okay my bad. I actually thought you were questioning the merits with that reply.

Next time I'll wait for the Devils PP to crap the bed, and for them to lose the Faceoff battle...THEN I'll simply repost my OP.

I think if they can get Parise more involved they might have more success. I know in TB when Oates was down there they used the man behind the net more. They had him move around a lot more too. Right now we are hardly using Parise.

Next team is the top ranked penalty kill in the league now. The NEW top ranked penalty kill in the league Montreal. Hope we can do something there.

No shorthanded goals against is better than no PP goals.

We need Henrique back though Kovy had a good chance last night shorthanded. I actually dreaded in the shootout that he might be stopped.

Our faceoffs are **** almost solely because Elias takes so many (and a little because Zubrus is having a very uncharacteristically bad year). If you want a scapegoat for faceoffs, put it on Patty. Mills, Carter, Henrique, Josefson, and Zajac (when playing) are all 49% or better, which is a level I'm okay with.

Besides, the importance of faceoffs (except on the PK/at the end of games) is often overstated, imo.

True, but they could have easily given up another SHG early last night if Richards wasn't hideous on breakaways.

There was another game recently I think it was Philadelphia where we gave up a lot of shorthanded chances. I saw a few last night as well.

What was interesting about the FO last night was that the Devils improved from 36% in the first period to 56% for the game.
