We didn't need to clear cap like we did when we moved Gagne. And it wasn't like they had to move both Carter and Richards to get Bryz. Unlike San Jose moving someone like Ehrhoff to immediately make room for Heatley. Teams get ripped off in Salary Dumps because they have no leverage. Just getting rid of the player is good for the team.

This seemed more like the front office deciding to change the direction of a team that was feuding with itself and playing terrible hockey for an extended stretch.
The Carter deal was definitely a salary dump in order to sign Bryz

I think that the Simmonds + Hartnell power play combo could be a new platform for success. Use two physical/power forwards to tie up two of the penalty killers and then you have yourself a three on two with a ton of ice. Coupled with Giroux and Voracek + a d-man, that power play unit would not only be effective, but it would be a unique strategy few other teams use.

I feel bad for Mike. But if you go over to the LA site and read their posts the love affair that started last June is over. The defenders say he is playing hurt and that Simmer and Schenn are getting their point because we play a wide open system. While the others say they were against the trade from day one. Homer does not hit on every deal that is for sure. But those two deals are looking very nice. I am lookimg forward to seeing Cousins in the line up in the future. The kid has some flair to his game by all accounts. Now if we can only get our goalies on board!

Just my opinion but I actually think he's so good because he is so lanky. He is big enough that smaller and average sized defenders still struggle to clear him out of the crease but he's light enough that he is still far more agile and quicker then most bigger defenders who can overpower him. He does have cat like reflexes when it comes to spinning around or jumping to the other side or simply diving down while batting a puck to the net.

I don't feel bad for Richards one bit. When it happened I couldn't believe the Flyers got the #1 prospect in hockey and a guy like Simmonds for him.

Plus he did this every year. Would absolutely disappear for long stretches. But hey he's probably just waiting to flip the switch.

Shenn and simmer are scoring more bc we score more...def...we generate more chances.

I don't feel bad for mike at all. I feel bad for LA fans thinking he was some scorer. I couldn't have been happy with this trade...

Simmonds will be a dominante power forward if he keeps playing this way, but Simmonds has proven to be streaky because he'll go through stretches of trying to play a finesse game, much like Hartnell, and even Jeff Carter when they go into scoring slumps.

Love him, I want him on this team until retirement. He's become my favorite current Flyer, that position has been in limbo since we dealt Richards. I still miss him D8.

Before Simmonds came here he was my second favorite non Flyer (see the trade thread for proof), and he is one of my fav current Flyers right now. It is interesting to me though that it is for somewhat different reason, and he has shown an offensive side I didn't really know existed. It looks good though. I find it funny he is outscoring Richards but I don't know if that will continue. Remember that Schenn was the corner piece in the deal.

The day the trade was made I went on you tube to search "Wayne Simmonds highlights". What I saw of him, plus what I had read his role was in LA led me to proclaim to my brother-in-law that "This kid will score 25 goals in this system". He looked at me like I was insane.

Who's wearing the straightjacket now, Bob? Love his game, his attitude, his willingness to do whatever is asked of him and then some. Definitely a "win" for Holmgren.

I think Berube has had some good influence on Simmonds ..I know he's always reminding him to use his big body.I also agree that although Simmonds is pretty slim..he's "wirey" and that is part of his advantage. He might need to bulk up a bit but not a lot.

First thing I thought when I saw him was a Flyers' jersey. He looks more natural in it than he did with a Kings' jersey.

He plays with a lot more heart and intensity than the previous #17 ever did. Simmer's the man, such a cool player to have. And, yes, he was born to wear the orange and black.

That's why I put the quotation marks around "salary dump", given the myriad rationales given for the deals at the time. The Flyers were pretty much up against the cap, and needed to create space for Bryzgalov. Dealing Carter and Richards created salary space. However, as the vast majority believe, there were other factors involved.

To think there was a thread to get him off the powerplay. Lol. Guy has found his niche. I don't think he'll be a 40 goal guy because he doesn't score goals in a variety of ways (how many times has he actually beat a goalie with a wrist shot?), but that's fine. He wasn't brought in to score 40. That's a very lofty number. One other thing I'll say about Simmer is he brings the effort every game, every shift, and that is very rare to see. Gotta love having a guy like that on your team regardless of production.

John LeClair didn't score goals in a bunch of different ways either. Gotta say though, that's who Simmonds reminds me of, but with better skating. His hands and his skill are very underrated.

LeClair had a devastating slap shot though, IIRC.

This. I was going to say the same thing. I think Simmer can be a 30 goal scorer if he builds on this new found confidence, but until he finds at least another trick, I think 40 is out of reach.

God knows I'll take the 30 though! I was excited to get Simmonds in the deal, but never expected this sort of production to be honest. Hopefully it continues.

It was like Simmonds reads this thread or something. Seen him wind up for two slappers last night. Didn't recall him using one all year. Lol.
