That is why they never once thought of having him as a coach. They know how he is with the media and they wont meddle in between. He had problems in TB with some players and the GM came in and sided with Tortarella. If Dipietro had problems and went to Wang then Torts would be fired. Garth would sit quietly and helpless.

Hence - TORTS WOULD NEVER HAVE TAKEN THE JOB AND WAS NEVER CALLED!!

this is like comparing an Aston Martin to a Ford Pinto. they don't belong in the same garage.

Must read for Capuano or for next years coach D. Weight

Scotty Bowman’s 5 Golden PrinciplesHere are the 5 Golden Principles from Scotty Bowman’s coaching manual titled “The Art of Coaching the Team During the Game:”

1. Surround yourself with the best personnel! Running the team is a team effort.

2. Be creative! Only when you try to create a goal you can achieve that goal.

3. Create the core of your team made up of strong leaders! Without 5-6 players on your team, who you can always rely on, you cannot accomplish any initiative.

4. Grasp conflicts and be ready to be confrontational! Resolved conflicts pulls everyone together more.

5. Be critical but to not criticize! To get out of setbacks you need strength not to sink deeper.

Oh my how the Islanders miss the mark with rule number one. It's really the heart of any conversation you can have about this team - the fact that Wang hired the friggin' back up goaltender to be the GM of the team is almost infathomably absurd and no matter how long it's been or how much it's been talked about, it's not enough.

Not to mention the carousel of cheap AHL coaches.

That's the thing that kills me about Garth Snow, he didnt surround himself with smart guys who were willing to help him. He was power hungry and paranoid. That is why he got rid of Botta and Gallof and kept Strang close at bay.

Its all business and acquiring the best talent, He never got top guys to assist out of fear of losing his job. He fired Jankowski for reasons unknown and here we are left with him and his buddy Doug Weight whom he promised a pay check to.

interesting topic...
i dont think this is so much a question of what type of result would Torts garner but moreso, what type results would follow if they had a coach with ANY league stature enough to hold the current ownership to the fire. Cappy can sit there all day and complain about needing more toughess but really who's listening? There's a reason why Capuano was hand picked as head coach and theres a reason why there wasnt any overwhelming offers to take the job (that we know of). Cappy is willing to be the puppet in order to get his foot in the door and an established NHL level coach simply knows better, its career suicide.

There's no doubt in my mind that Torts would have this current team sitting in at least a 6th spot. That said, the current team would be considerably different. Like him or not, if you dont play within his system, you're done and he doesnt care who you are which is about the only thing i actually like about him. PAP wouldnt play (he's the reason why you have him now), Bailey...not a chance, grabner...probably not. Simply put, he'll take a team full of 3rd and 4th liners over a team of scorers who refuse to hit anyone and give up the body, right or wrong the isles would be a different looking team for sure. And i can guarantee you Hayley would've been on the team from training camp to this day.

we all know this is more of an ownership issue, as long as the current regime is in place no credible coach in thier right mind is going to take the job and be at the mercy of those two dopes. I feel for Cappy, i really do. and could someone get the man a decent haircut, the bloomin union/scalloped lobster tail look just isnt cutting it.

If anyone has ever read Moneyball, I think Capuano is our version of Art Howe. He is basically a puppet of Wang and Snow who in reality make all the important coaching decisions. As far as Tortorella, would love to have him here, but no way in hell he'd ever come for the aforementioned reason.

Torts was actually one of the prime interviewees for the job that Gordon wound up with. He would have been here if Charles Wang would accept a coach that could stand on his own two feet and not be subservient to him.

As for Tortorella vs Capuano, the biggest difference between the two is simply purpose and understanding. Every Rangers player on the ice has a defined and clear assignment on every play, and all 5 assignments are designed to mesh together as a unit. Every Ranger knows their assignment in every situation like the back of their hand, and as such, all 5 players are moving in sync, theyre not making plays to shoot themselves in the foot. Its night and day with Capuano. 5 players running around in different directions. For the most part, guys play hard, but they have no (or a very lacking) team structure to adhere to. One guy is along the boards and nobody is there to support him. Or the Islanders win a puck battle and nobody is open for an outlet. So they make panic plays and turn the puck over. Details like that would be night and day. Would the Islanders be first in the East, no, but over the course of a year, getting enough details right would have added up to this team having the 6 - 10 more points needed to be right in the thick of the playoff race instead of holding on by a string of dental floss.

And the leadership aspect, while I feel is a bit overrated, is also night and day with these two coaches. The Islanders shrink to size 0 in a big game. Games where emotions should be used to propel the Islanders into playing better than they usually do, overwhelm the club to the point where they cant make simple plays. Home opener, Senators game, Panthers game at the NVMC last week. All were big, emotional games where a good coach would let the nerves generated by such a game propel the team, those emotions wilted the Islanders.

I disagree that guys like PAP, Grabner, Bailey would all be out. IMO Tortorella would have these guys playing with purpose. Some wouldnt cut it, but I think the players would look a lot different out there under real guidance and leadership. Grabner is the fastest man in the NHL. A 34 goal scorer as a rookie. I know he has been hurt a bit, but there is no way under a real coach, that Grabner looks as lost as he does now. The guy has a physical skill that is matched by literally nobody in the league. A real coach turns that into a real weapon, see Carl Hagelin who doesnt have nearly the toolbox that Grabner does.

Tortorella would have been a great coach to have when we had guys like Yashin, Peca, Osgood, Hamrlik, Aucion and such. They like to coach veterans, not kids.
Rangers are a fairly young team. Sure they have Richards, Gaborik and Fedotenko, but they also have Stepan, McDonagh and Anisimov playing key roles and big minutes.
