Ask again in 3-4 years.

Howson's second rounders:

07- Stefan Legein and Will Weber
08- Cody Goloubef
09- Kevin Lynch
10- Dalton Smith and Petr Straka
11- Boone Jenner (first pick)

lots of potential, not much in the way of results yet.....

The only, and I say only, good thing here is that Vermette's cap hit is gone. Unless, of course, a good player comes from one of those picks, which isn't likely given our track record, but oh well.

Im terrified of what Nash's return will be (if he gets moved) now, haha. Curtis Freakin' McElhinney, makes Mason look like Roy.

Blurg. Hoped for better.

An extra 2nd round pick is decent future trade currency though and the money cleared from the books doesn't hurt (provided it is invested wisely).

Does McElhinney's presence mean Sanford is on the move soon and/or isn't recovering as expected?

A second rounder is generally not ever going to be a top 6 player so that goalie better be extremely good, lol. Not a good start here imo.

I knew there would be some overreactions about this trade. We got rid of 3.75 million that was on the books until 2015. He's hasn't been very good for the past 2 seasons, and faceoff skill isn't worth 3.75 million. Howson didn't strike again or whatever cheesy thing that is being said, this is a case of a player not having value because his contract is bad and his play has been bad. He makes terrible decisions on a nightly basis. The salary cap savings is huge and we got a 2nd and possibly 4th pick. Better return than I expected, thought we'd only get a 2nd.

Either was Vermette, he hasn't been in 2 years.

Not going to sugar coat it...

McElhinney is one of the worst goalies I've ever watched. He was generally poor in Anaheim. When Hiller was pulled on a bad night and he was brought in, I feared the team woud actually give up double digits.

I sincerely hope this trade means that Legace will get a two-way deal if we trade Sanford or (God willing) Mason because the alternative is truly frightening.

This is a salary dump. Hopefully the 2nd can be packaged with our second to get another pick in the first round or something of value because the return on this trade does not wow me.

Anyone think this might be a move that gives Howson the chance to move Sanford or package him with Nash or Carter? I would think Sanford has some decent value to move. I know a lot of people want to keep Sanford as the backup if we find a decent tender, but just my outlook on it.

I don't mind the return. Takes Vermettes salary off the books. I would have loved to get Connor Murphy/McBackup straight up for Vermette just because he's a hometown boy and we don't have opportunities like that.

I think I would have liked the 2nd being a 2013 vs a 2012 since based on what I've read on how crappy this year's draft is after about the top ten prospects. Phoenix might as well have given us Monopoly money in the return.

This deal is all about taking undeserved money off the payroll. There was no bang for the buck in Vermette's deal. Too bad we couldn't talk Phoenix into taking Methot off our hands as well.

Considering Sanfords on the IR, i cant see him getting that much attention with the time he's missed this year from injuries

Even better. We don't have to watch him even play!

This trade isn't about getting assets. It's about getting rid of an underperforming player who is making a lot and won't be around during the rebuild and now we make room for RyJo.

At this point in time, why would we trade Sanford? To make Mason feel comfortable? To assure that our ECHL backup gets more playing time?

I really liked Vermette and I would have loved to see him on the Bruins, but close to 4 million for 3 more years for what is essentially a 3rd line centre? Not great value IMHO.

The salary dump was a great move, here's hoping the 5th turns into a 4th.

4 million off the books is 4 million that can go towards new defenseman, or a goalie. Time for this team to build from the net out.

This team is in for a long dark future if they allow Howson to be the dealer with Nash

Actually, I've heard next year's depth was pretty bad and that GMs were planning to dump 2013 picks this year because they didn't see them as being of much value. Believe it was one of the TSN guys who suggested this recently.

2nd rounder

Per Gare Joyce's book the odds of a 2nd rounder going on to play 400 NHL games is about 15%

Not a huge number of stars come from the 2nd round but check out some of the key players on Boston's roster that were drafted in the 2nd round. One of them being McQuad who was probably the CBJ's best 2nd round pick.

I would have liked more for Vermette but seriously he's signed for 3 more years at 3.75M and has 8 goals and 19 assists while being a -17. I just don't suspect theres much market for that.

If we want a remake of the team then we need to open roster spots.

I wonder if they even intend to try to bring up McElhinney or if he is to help Springfield in the palyoff chase. He is a UFA next year. Would he have to pass through waivers to come up?

This trade is basically a salary dump and open up the roster for new blood move.

Great points. That's money wasted on a 3rd line center.

This. Jacket fans are overvaluing Vermette far too much. I think Howson did pretty good on this deal. Got pretty much what Antoine is worth and dumped salary. Vermette isn't that good and to expect a 1st for him is laughable.
