What killed Vermette's return was he has another 3 seasons at a $3.75mil Cap Hit remaining after this season. Columbus did pretty well considering that contract.

Yeah, that is a huge buzzkill. Im surprised phoenix took him on with their financial situation.
Well, it's basically just a 2nd for Vermette.
I guess his contract hurt the deal, but the player, himself, is probably worth a little more considering the other trades that have been going on.
Can't help but think this is a precursor for CBJ to get a better return for Nash or Carter. Clearing some cap room so they have a better bargaining position as far as return is concerned.

Don't get the Vermette hate. Guy is a good centerman. Has good hands and plays a solid game all around. Is 3.75m/season a solid chunk of change? Yep, but it's not like he can't be a player worth that money, because he can be.

Honestly, wasn't really thinking too much of Vermette based on what I'd looked at before when we were talking about him. But, looking at him again, Columbus did get shorted.
They should be looking to build around Yakupov and acquiring/drafting players that will compliment him. Just hope the Canes don't wind up winning the draft. That would be awful.

I'm not, they've got a lot of money coming off after this season:
Doan 4,550,000 $ - probably takes a paycut, 3,500,000-4,000,000 $ IMO.
Langkow 4,500,000 $ - could be re-signed, but not for that money.
Whitney 3,000,000 $ - re-signs? maybe.. IMO same money if re-signed.
Pyatt 1,000,000 $ - no idea what happens with him..
Brule 925,000 $ (re-entry) RFA - seems like he has found his place in Phoenix.. probably takes less and gets a one-way contract.. wild guess, 850,000 $ 2 years.
Bolduc (UFA), Chipchura (RFA), Watkins (RFA) - no idea..
Rozsival 5,000,000 $ - Yotes are stacked on D, probably gone as UFA.
Aucoin 2,000,000 $ - no idea..
Sauer 1,750,000 $ - 4 year contract, 69 games played of which 68 during the first and one game in the 2nd season.. probably gone and career possibly over.

The irritating part about many of these teams around the league that are bad this year is that they still have had superstar core players to build around while they suck. Tampa is moderately fun to watch just because of their big 3 up front, even while they lose. For all the years of being terrible, we really don't have much to show for it currently on the roster (though the pipeline is looking good). Carolina has Staal, Skinner, and Ward all as key pieces. Then you look at Tampa, who had St. Louis and Lecavalier but still managed to get Stamkos. Hopefully Huberdeau, Kulikov, and Markstrom and some of the other guys turn into our stars, but the best we really have from the organization as comparable to St. Louis or Lecavalier or Staal is Weiss.

youre right thats why if we really want to take the next step as an organization this summer we have to be willing to acquire a superstar talent. I still havent seen the commitment from yormark and viner that they're willing to do that.

Most of these teams get the talent through the draft, then acquire players that will push them over the edge. Tallon is doing what he did in Chicago. Hossa didn't come in until they had Toews and Kane already.
