Matt Hackett recalled to Wild

There's been talk of this going on in various threads, but it's probably own-topic worthy.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/139982683.html
Quote:
Both Harding and Niklas Backstrom practicing, but Hackett was recalled because Harding tweaked something in practice yesterday GM Chuck Fletcher said....Hackett, 21, is 2-0 with a 0.85 goals against average (GAA) and a .977 save percentage (SV%) in three games with Minnesota this season stopping 84 of 86 shots faced. He is 16-13-4 with a 2.42 GAA, a .917 SV% and one shutout in 34 games with the Aeros.

Koivu and Harding didn't make trip to Florida for #mnwild. Hackett stays for now

Harding leaves ice, comes back on, finishes out practice. He isn't travelling with the team to Florida for back-to-back games against the Panthers and Stars. He could just be injured, but I'm with you in that it just feels odd.

At this point, wouldn't it be better for Minnesota to place Koivu on IR?

I suppose he could have just came back to the ice to see if he could play through something, but I dont know.

My trade sense is tingling.

Then again its been doing that ever since we started sitting Zidz, so I hardly pay attention to it anymore.

If we do that, we tell every team with a potential top 6 forward to trade that we are desperate and they raise the price, so I'm betting Koivu stays "day to day" at least until the deadline.

I think the other 29 teams know how we're sitting right now, would think if we can put Koivu on IR retroactive to some point so it's not a big deal if we need to call-up a player or bring in one via trade.

Smells a bit like trade deadline insurance to me.

Because Koivu missing a week's worth of games will obviously lower the price since teams don't look at that. Minnesota doesn't have to place him on IR with 12 healthy forwards (11 if Kassian doesn't count) but at this point they don't lose anything placing Koivu on IR. When he's healthy, he can come back and the Wild get another forward.

I think/hope Hackett starts in Dallas. Second night of the back-to-back, and a quality goalie who doesn't yet have the mindset of "we always lose in Dallas." Something for the rest of the team to rally around, too.

Are we even in the market for adding a top 6 forward? I haven't heard any rumblings about us picking up a player.

Um yeah I think we've been in the market for a top six forward our whole entire existence as a franchise.

Kinda sounds like Harding might have scared management by "tweaking" something in practice and they are holding him out to heal.

Better to not take any chances.

Obviously, but are we looking to acquire one via trade this year? I hadn't heard anything about that.

Yeah I would say so. I am not sure if people would consider Ruutu a top six guy but we were linked to him until he got injured. We have also been linked to Parise but will probably rather get him in the off season as a free agent.

We had some significant interest in Ruutu a couple weeks ago but it's died down since then. Plus he's injured anyways.

Holy crap am I glad we didn't make that mistake. He's a $3m player, maybe $3.5m tops. That's what happens when you have a crap team, you get bent over. Like the Wild did with Backstrom and Koivu.

Gotta keep up appearances even if everyone can see through it.

Placing Koivu on IR tells the fans (who don't pay very close attention to the business side of hockey) that he's hurt and out for a while. Other team GMs might understand how retroactive IR works, and how it adjusts roster space as well as other considerations, but your average fan doesn't have a clue. If you put Koivu on IR today, that guy thinking about buying San Jose tickets for Sunday's game probably doesn't. I know the wife is upset at the prospects of Koivu being out for the only game she's going to have a shot at attending until at least next year.

Team too. The psychological difference between "our captain is day-to-day" and "our captain is on IR" is probably pretty big, even if they understand that they're functionally the same.
