If I were Nashville, I'd make it a conditional 1st only if he resigns, a 3rd if he doesn't.
The deal wouldn't get done. You have to make it worth Toronto's while to trade Grabo, and Budish and a 3rd doesn't do it. If teams are giving up 1sts for Kyle Quincey, and a 2nd for Dominic Moore, Grabo is definitely worth this deal.

Take a look at some of the other proposals in this thread (like the Ribero one. Or the one that's Grabo for 1st+Budish) and tell me that this is a better deal for Nashville than those.....
Here was my proposal in another thread that I felt works pretty well, and most agreed.
Mikhail Grabovski
NSH 1st Rounder 2012
Zach Budish
Preds get a cost effective guy who can produce and instantly becomes their first line centre, and plays with heart and soul while putting up solid offence.
Leafs get another 1st, and the kind of prospect that makes Burke drool (huge, offensive upside, hits like a truck, and is American.)
Yeap I think it's a great trade for both teams. I think Grabovski is a great fit too with preds.

Preds say no way. As one poster mentioned they won't trade they're bluechip prospect for a rental. That trade breaks down to 1st + Lindback for Grabovski and Ellis for 2nd, 3rd, holzner, Gusto which is a big no from them.

EDIT: Though i'd rahter make the pick conditional. 1st if he resigns, later round if he doesnt.
No conditional, Grabovski is the best rental available and a two way centre that is a 60 pointer who can be a game breaker. I would rather go to Hawks for McNeill + 2nd/3rd in that case.
They want a great prospect Ellis, a first round pick, and a goalie who can start for them in exchange to rent a second liner? it's insanity.
Oh but they'll throw in some garbage and make it look like you're getting a bunch lol.
ellis is indeed a great prospect. blum might be more approriate, though still really good
later first round pick in a draft thats all over the place and not too deep
linds wouldnt start. he'd be stuck in the same rotating door that Gus is in with Reimer right now
and Grabos not a 2nd liner. guy doesnt get the credit he deserves.
though the whole rental thing is a turn off for other teams, i understand that. reality is though rental prices are usually high, and if he was signed, thered be no trade involving him.
i DO recognize that it favours the Leafs, im not saying its the best deal, but there could definitely be worse!
Deal. I'd do it without your 2nd added in, but i love Ribs, so i'm biased
Yea, Blum + Budish + 1st was what we came to in the other thread, so I figured the upgrade from Budish to Spaling would be worth a 2nd, or 2 rounds down in the draft. I'd take any of:

Grabs isn't a first liner though, even in Toronto even if he is their most competitive, hardest working, and most consistent player.
I think you guys are a forward away from being terrifying and Grabovski would be a great addition but he's not worth a package like that IMO. A good prospect and a first is just too much for any rental outside of players like Hossa back in the day who are on another level.
I don't see any of the Toronto proposals working. Many are way off in value and if I remember correctly wasn't there some sort of issue between Grabovski and Kostitsyn? That might make him a no go.

If this is a "go for it" trade for the Preds, it makes no sense to throw Spaling in for any of those packages. He is severely underrated for his current contributions-- Preds would want to substitute a prospect and keep the lineup intact.
What could the Predators get for this package? We're definetly looking for offensive forwards, preferably snipers. Centers and wingers are both fine. Other pieces that can be thrown in are Anders Lindback, Matt Halischuk, Taylor Beck, Micheal Latta, Austin Watson, Mattias Ekholm, and Ryan Ellis (would replace Blum, and he won't be cheap).

Grabs is easily on tier/ahead with the likes of Weiss, Ribeiro, or other forwards Brown, Clowe.
to break it down really quickly with numbers...
he's tied for 11th in C goals, (18, currently tied with Kesler, EStaal, OJokinen, BRichards, Fisher, Hudler, Little) and tied for 28th in C pts (40 - BRichards, Gagner, Krejci). he's hitting 50% of faceoffs and has a respectable 15% shooting percentage. All while sitting at 54th for TOI as a C (sitting at 936:03 versus BRichards' 1,167:14)He's also only 58th for PP TOI as a C. not the most consistent linemates this season either.
A +7 on a negative differential team and only 16PIM, often playing against the other teams' top lines. unfortunately only around 30 hits this season and only 25 blocked shots, though he's certainly not afraid to get his body involved in any part of the ice
obviously heart and hustle doesnt make a player top line material, but it certainly doesnt hurt. he wont stop skating, and he's pretty quick, to boot. good offensive instinct. good defensive instinct.
in no way is he a top line elite player. but i would say he's a top 30 centreman and easily worthy of top line minutes on the majority of the teams in the league

Blum + 1st + condition 4th which becomes a 3rd if Nashville makes the conference final for Grabovski + AHL defenseman with NHL potential (ex: Holzer, Mikus, Gysbers)?
HOWEVER.
Toronto is in a playoff race and likely wants to keep Grabo.
If we did do MacArthur for Blum it would allow us to do Schenn for JVR which makes things interesting.

I don't see them trading Blum and 1st for a rental but I would jump on any deal that involves Blum. Blum + 2nd would be perfect.
I would be more then ecstatic if Leafs got a package of either McNeill + 2nd or Blum +2nd for Grabovski and I think it's a well deserved for both sides.
We're fighting for playoffs so I can understand, but not enough hype about a player like Grabo being possibly available.

Blum + cond 2nd?
condition being if Preds make SCF it becomes a 1st?
I could probably see a deal next year working out even better for Nashville. They'll have everyone they need under contract, and know how much they can spend, as well as have Radulov back for cheap, and they'll probably be odds on favorites with 2 great PPG forwards, their insane defense, and Rinne.
