No way....I didn't want Kovalchuk, don't want Ovechkin.

I sure would take Malkin or Datsyuk though.

I wouldn't sacrifice 3-4 players+ prospects + more or less 2 1st round picks. Not for Ovechkin. He is a good player but he unlike Crosby and Malkin do not make players around him better

obviously would have to "kick the tires"...

but ultimately the asking price would probably be way too high.

Ovechkin's cap hit is 9.5M$ for the next 9 years... at that price you need to be absolutely sure you're getting a 50g/100pt player that is committed to being his absolute best.

Ovi's "struggles" the last 2 seasons seem quite directly linked to his less than "elite" approach to offseason training/preparation.

obviously the "top of the league" talent is still there, but contrary to popular belief, you don't maintain a league best level of play long term without being absolutely dedicated to training/preparation.

his salary + the treasure chest of assets we'd have to give up for him probably make it an absolute no-go.

now that said, if the market for him was bare, given the salary/cap hit, and he was available at something similar to what Jagr was moved for back in the day (Kris Beech, Michal Sivek and Ross Lupaschuk and future considerations, or later 1-for-1 for Anson Carter... how in the hell we weren't in on those trades back in the non-cap era blows the mind!), then i'd have to consider it.

Ovi is definitely extremely competitive, and perhaps the "humbling" of watching Malkin & others clearly establish themselves as more dominant players + getting traded for a less than stellar return, would light enough of a fire under him to create the maturity that seems to be presently lacking in his approach to the game.

if the price was right, i'd take that gamble

It would probably cost us Subban, Price and more....

The problem for Wash, is that they will never get a fair value for Ovechkin because he is more important to them then to any other team.

Would love to have Ovie. But unless we got him in a Chelios/Roy kind of steal I don't think we'd be better off with him. So in short - I would ask, but I wouldn't sell the farm.

He'd be too busy trying to score at the strip clubs to work for 60 goals when 30 is enough to keep the fans drooling and content.

yeah, too bad he doesn't come for free, or without baggage - which is why this hypothetical is being raised in the first place. im not even entertaining the thought because it's so far our in the realm of fantasy i don't feel like wasting my time thinking about what i'd have to give away to get him and whether his current slump ends, or gets worse

He has reduced himself from "Him vs. Crosby" to "typical highly talented forward" who is arguably worse than Lucic, Kessel, Bobby Ryan, and a whole host of other 30 goal scorers. Hell, he's dropped so much I believe that the debate should be about him and Malkin and not even bother with Crosby since Crosby is waaaaay better than him. And hell, Malkin might be too high for him as well.

No he wouldn't. There is a strong interactive effect between Backstrom, him, and Green that cannot be replicated here. Backstrom is an elite center and playmaker in his own right who creates extra space for Oven Chicken. When OV is without him, he can be held in check by Dmen who can position themselves well; Hal Gill was able to "suffocate" him well despite HUGE differences between Gill's athleticism and Oven Chicken's.

Needs?
Perhaps for the allegedly(I only say allegedly because I have never been to Montreal or Canada in general for that matter; I believe it's true) superior hotness of the chicks in Montreal, not for the fans down here who already worship him like a ****ing god.

According to the math, that's around what he will become if he plays here.

I would trade Carey Price + a conditional number 1 (not being a lottery pick) for Ovy straight up. I love Price but he seems much more replaceable than a potential 60g scorer. Price will be commanding a big salary soon enough as well. Ovy's contract is not bad when considered over the next ten years.

I would not trade PK under any circumstances. His ceiling is difficult to predict.

Of course you go after him if he is available, its OVECHKIN

Montreal would bring out the best in him, could also bring out the worst, but as long as he scores 40+
