One season, I was fortunate enough to be playing on a really good team heading into the trade deadline. Everybody knew that were going to be active and there were rumors we were targeting a forward out of the other conference — a big name. I was just getting ready to walk out of my apartment and head to the airport when it came across the ticker that we had indeed landed this guy.
The words crawled along the bottom of the screen: "Team X acquires Player Y in exchange for …two players to be named later."
I'm sure there are other trades that could fit this description, but the one that popped up in my head was Alex Mogilny for Brendan Morrison and Denis Pederson.
In one case I was playing for a really good, young team, which everyone believed was close to becoming a contender. We had a few older guys who clearly weren't in the team's long term plans. Some genius had scheduled practice for us at mid-day on the deadline, so we were on the ice while all the last-minute deals were being worked out.
About halfway through practice one of the equipment managers opened the gate and called two players off the ice. By the time the rest of us finished skating and got to the dressing room, they were gone. The whole thing was so matter-of-fact. Both of them knew it might be coming and neither of them seemed to break stride on their way out the door.
I'm pretty sure someone could go back and at least locate which team this was. I'm inclined to think it could be St. Louis, Atlanta, or Columbus just based on that.

Atlanta and Columbus weren't ever really considered contenders.

Almost. But "the player" says he was leaving his apartment to go to the airport. Presumably to travel to an away game-- New Jersey didn't play on the deadline that year (March 14th), and their next game was on the 15th, at home.

What year? The player doesn't specify how long ago this might have been...

Two possibilities that came to mind when I read this paragraph:
2006-07 - Ryan Smyth from EDM to NYI for Robert Nilsson and Ryan O'Marra
2006-07 - Peter Forsberg from PHI to NSH for Ryan Parent and Scottie Upshall

The poster I quoted suggested the Mogilny to NJ trade, which occurred on March 14th, 2000. If that was the instance the Player was referring to, the Player would then be a member of the Devils that year. But that doesn't make total sense since the Player says he was leaving his apartment on deadline day to go to the airport.
Granted, I'm assuming this is to head to an away game, which could be incorrect. But if that was true, then whatever team the Player was on at the time had an away game scheduled on or right after trade deadline day. The 2000 Devils (the team that acquired Mogilny) doesn't meet this last bit of criteria.
Basically, for this deal, what we're looking for is--
- A prominent forward.
- Traded to the opposite conference.
- Traded on deadline day.
- Two players going back the other way.
- The team acquiring the prominent forward had an away game scheduled on or right after the deadline.
Other things to consider that may be harder to find out:
- The forward in question was rumored to be available, specifically to the team that acquired him.
- The trade broke as "Prominent forward to X." With the other two players being named later.
- He's a current player
- He's been an upcoming UFA that the team had no interest in resigning "a few times in his career". That means he's not been considered a "core player" by any means, and is likely one of the many "mercenary" players the league has. It also means he's likely an older guy
- He once played for a "really good, young team" that everyone expected to become a contender soon. That team traded away two players (who may or may not have been "older guys") at the deadline. With the distinction of making them "older guys", it implies that he might have been younger when this happened.
- He once played for a "really good team" that acquired a big-name forward from the opposite conference at the deadline for two players.

The forsberg trade happened a week before, on Feb 15th. However, this may not rule out the trade. We have to assume that the player will fudge a few facts to remain anonymous

I remember hearing something about an Oiler practice with players leaving during it on deadline day. I was almost thinking Smyth from the get-go. Hope this helps.

Colby Armstrong, maybe.
-Current player
-Left Atlanta as a UFA
-Penguins
-Acquired Marian Hossa. But he was from the same conference. Damn
I'll just bring up this part of the article again.

I'm aiming for the two guys being traded though it's still tough since it means at least 2 roster players but nothing about prospects or picks.
