A first rounder? For Paul frickin' Gaustad?

And my day was going so well...

Bear in mind that Poile stockpiles picks for drafts he likes, and absolutely unloads in drafts he doesn't.

Like 2006, this is a top heavy draft, with the talent taking a sharp drop after pick 15 or so. This makes us notably better and improves a season-long weakness. I would have been fine with a 1st for Gaustad straight up, but getting a fourth totally wipes out the sting. Best defensive center on the market.

The price of "going for it."

I absolutely cannot believe all the hand-wringing going on over giving up a 1st round pick... frequently from some of the same posters who have trashed poile for being timid, hoarding assets too jealously, or not having the guts to do what it takes to improve this team

if Gaustad is as advertised, a PK beast, with grit, and good at faceoffs, it was well worth it.

guess what guys? If we flame out in the first round this year, it doesnt matter if we have ten first round picks....

this team and this franchise need a deep playoff run, right now...

we can worry about having one less prospect 3 years from now...

Still - I think this was a panic move/poor decision.
It was the FINAL piece Poile wanted to add and this draft won't be anything special in the 1st round except the top guys. The way this trade is...is adding a depth at forward while also adding a veteran forward which is something we need.

I'm glad we kept Blum also. When (if?) Suter/Weber leave, he'll be needed.

Josi/Ellis/Blum/Ekholm is a decent core of defenseman, and if we can augment that with some smart UFA, then we might just be OK.

My guess:

Erat - Fisher - S. Kostitsyn
A. Kostitsyn - Legwand - Wilson
Tootoo - Gaustad - Hornqvist
Bourque - Smith - Halischuk

McGrattan, Yip, Spaling
as extras

Nobody was coming for free today. Sure, it'd be nice to get him for less, but I'm sure Poile wouldn't have done it if there's was another choice.

Personally, I am ok with it. It is a bit surprising but I think this actually helps us long term if we get by the first round. lines should look like

SK Fisher Erat
AK Legwand Wilson (hell freaking yes)
Hals Smith Hornqvist
Borque/spaling Goose Tootoo

That is a killer lineup. Course, I doubt Smith plays center, probably will be

Smith Spaling Tootoo
Hornqvist Goose Hals

I also think that the Canucks got the shorter stick on the Hodgson trade.

2013 draft class is supposed to be much deeper. Giving up the 1st for 2012 does not cause me great heartburn.

GMDP did VERY well this year, IMHO. Can't call him 'stand pat' now...

exactly.

poile got pieces we needed, and hedged against Suter (and eventually Weber) leaving.

Aside from carter(who we werent getting no matter what, it would appear), there wasnt a "big" player moved at the deadline, so its not like Poile stood by and let someone else get Nash, Parise, Roy, Ribeiro, etc...

For all of you weeping about losing a first round pick, let's look at 2004-2009 (leaving 2 years out to, since 2010 and 2011 draft picks are still in "Jury's out" stage), pick number 25 overall (where we would be, today)

Jordan Caron, Greg Nemisz, Patrick White,Patrik Berglund,Andrew Cogliano,Rob Schremp

Of the group, only Berglund is even nominally "impact." Cogliano is a bottom six center. The rest are AHL\fringe NHLers.

First round picks get incredibly overrated around here.

Is it just me, or does Smith need to be the one making the AHL trip? While we all see NHL talent, the game is going a bit too fast for him right now. He is gripping the stick too much, and I feel like he is being physically man-handled right now. I think a trip to the AHL would do him some good...

Erat - Fisher - SK
AK - Leggy - Horn
Tootoo - Spaling - Wilson
Halischuk - Gaustad - Bourque/Yip

I do think Smith needs a better playmaker on his line but he's still one of our better offensive forwards.

We now have forward depth AND depth on the blue line. If someone gets injured, we got nothing to worry about unless there name is Weber and Suter (or Rinne)

It's just you...he's a great player and is putting the puck on net. Even if he's not scoring every night..just putting that extra pressure on the goalie causes confusion and mistakes.

Erat - Fisher - SK
AK - Legwand - Wilson
Smith - Spaling - Hornqvist
Halischuk - Gaustad - Tootoo
Bourque Yip

If we had given the 1st for AK46 and the 2nd for Gaustad the feeling would be different. It's all a matter of perspective, overall with the three deals we made to bring players in I think the value was fair and we didn't give up the future. Consider me happy, the happiest i've ever been with Poile on deadline day!!!

I was actually thinking the same thing but about Bourque. It's hard to make a case for either of them to be sent down, but with the recent additions Trotz is going to have to make some tough decisions.
