Since the beginning of 07-08 season, Rick Nash has 163 G in 369 GP (0.44 GPG). Jeff Carter has 159 G in 357 GP (0.45 GPG).

Well I can guarantee you an agent wouldn't have let his client give a hometown discount for a very long term without any kind of NTC. Even a modified NTC that says don't trade me to Edmonton, Winnipeg, Columbus, Long Island, Montreal etc could have saved Jack.

Agents do serve a purpose, Jack learned that the hard way. He now has to spend the prime years of his career in a city I guarantee you he despises.
NTC wouldn't have saved him. You have to be past the threshold of unrestricted free agency in order to get no-move clauses. Jack wasn't there yet.

There's no chance of that. His balls are safe.

How is that? He was too young for NTC as well?

My thoughts:
I am not a JJ fan. He I'd expendable for Voynov. I did loved his contract though.

I will miss that first rounder. Drafting in the 4th round is gonna suck, but I am sure we'll get some picks before the draft.

Carter is on a 10 year deal at a cap hit as good as a Western Bacon Cheeseburger after a weekend in a Mexican prison. This is the first sniper we've had since Luc. He'll be happy to get out of a horrrrrible situtation and now in a playoff push.
He'll be like a born again Christian.

I am pro trade.

I'm thinking with Dean putting Brown on the block, he's looking for a BIG over payment from someone.

As explained before, he wasn't eligible.

And that "hometown" discount is/was overrated. That is his value, lets not pretend JJ deserves 5 mil a year.

How do you feel about the actual hockey side of the trade, putting aside your obvious sympathy for a Michigan Man going to OSU Country?

I'm not expecting you to high-five DL, but I seem to recall you being high on Carter when rumors first sprung up that he could be available while he was still a Flyer. Glaring weakness on this team is goal scoring and that's what he does.

Obviously, JJ is still a King if DL could close a UFA signing like Gaborik or Kovy, but this move has to be a step in the right direction as far as adding legit talent up front, no?

You can only have a NTC if you're eligible for unrestricted free agency. And he didn't even negotiate one for when he was eligible.

One of the biggest gripes I have with the CBA. You shouldn't be able to sign a player to such a long-term contract without running some of the term first.

I don't doubt Carters talent, in fact I liked him in Philly more than Richards, but he's not a winger. Period. So unless the Kings aren't done and are looking for quality on the wing, they haven't addressed the holes at that position with this trade. Trading DB23 only creates a bigger hole there. This amounts to a shakeup move that will cost the team in the long run if Carter can't stay healthy unless they back it up with more moves.

First of all, NTC only kick in after a player is a certain age. I don't know exactly but I think it happens when the player is around 27 years old, dependent on how old he was when he signed. So I don't think a NTC/NMC would have mattered.

Secondly, Gagne had a NTC with the Flyers and they still forced him out. So much for treating your homegrown players well. A NTC/NMC only gives a player so much control. He's from Michigan so Columbus is closer to home than LA is so now his family/friends can come and watch him much easier than they did when he was a King.

Also, after what the Flyers did to Carter, you can bet agents are warning their players about hometown discounts and player loyalty.

Finally, do you personally know Johnson? How do you know he despises Columbus?

Sucks for you guys if you make the playoffs. You know? The time of the year when Jeff Carter completely vanishes?? And trust me. He will. He always does. I'm from Philly. I've seen it every time.

We overpaid for Carter.

Johnson for Carter straight up would have been fine.

Carter better produce.

Unfortunately I dont think this solves any of the King's scoring problems.

We still need a coach that is not stuck in 1996.

This is what I love about Herby. He gets all worked up and argues something that wasn't even possible.

When I am dictator, Herby is going to be Iraqi minister of Information.
