Right now, his previous team is dead LAST in GF. That makes JJ look worse than he really is - the forwards just aren't scoring giving JJ the "benefit" of even-strength goals.

Sorry but that argument doesn't work no matter how bad your offense is as long as you're giving up an equal or fewer amount of even strength goals. The Kings are basically an even team (-4) when it comes to goals for and against at even strength with shorthanded goals for and against added in. They were +12 last season and +16 the season before.

Jack on the ice for another goal against. At least it was on the pp and he remains -1 tonight.

Has he been on the ice for every goal against so far in Columbus?

Just read through the CBJ GDT, there is not one negative comment about JJ in there. They like his effort and toughness so far.

They will get there. Minus three tonight.

And he's being used to kill penalties. That's scary.

Whoever said he will be a -50 in Columbus next season might be right. It's too bad Hitchcock never remained head coach in Columbus, he might have done wonders to Jack's career.

Johnson shouldn't have been a minus 3. Only one goal could have been blamed on him when he coughed up the puck, you can't really do anything when the goalie lets in shots from impossible angles.

The old bad luck defense. How many years does he get to learn defense?

Every player gets minuses from bad goals against. It's all the other ones that makes him bad defensively.

Playing in front of CBJ's goalies won't do JJ's +/- any favors.

Poor JJ.

Ah well.

We have him with Wiz, so that pairing is going to let allot get by. The cbj now has more puck moving dmen than shut down d men, so we will have them that way for the last 20.

Some people only like shut down, some like the return that puck mover give.
As long as he makes smart moves when paired properly he will be fine.

Jack was paired with shut down guys in Los Angeles too, but for whatever reason, he just made bad plays at the worst time either turnover or losing a guy..

I think he as improved this year, though given the Jackets current situation, it would seem that his plus minus will end in the minus 20's again..

The kings have been my late night team for a few years, pre Quick. I think both teams will be happy with the trade as long as JJ keeps this year going and Carter grows up, coin flip on both counts.

I have given up trying to figure out whether Jack Johnson is bad at defense or if there is some other explanation for why his +/- is so atrocious. Maybe he isn't paired with the right guys. Maybe it's because he wasn't made for this system. Maybe it really is just an improbably long run of bad luck. Who knows. Bottom line is that for whatever reason, he IS on the ice for a disproportionate number of goals-against compared to goals-for, and it's been a trend for four frickin' years.

I'm sad to see him go because I respect his character and work ethic and I think he's an overall good guy. I think he has the drive and physical tools to be a dominant defenseman. But right now, statistically for the Kings, I think this truly will be a case of addition by subtraction.

Great post. Exactly how I feel. I wasn't a fan of the trade because of the length of Carter's contract and because I feel the 1st round pick was superfluous but I can't deny that Voynov has played well and that the bottom line is goals are scored when Jack is on the ice. I'm rooting for him though in Columbus.

Sanford looked awful tonight. That team has had some serious goaltending issues this season.

I can attest to all of this, as well as the fact that Jack really stepped up and went into beast mode when Doughty was out.

Could Jack ever step up and play to his potential and not in the shadow of Doughty? Obviously we'll never know.

Yeah we'll never know...

I was sad to see him go, because I know Jack wanted to very much be part of the first cup team in Los Angeles.

I do however see Jack back in LA when he is a free agent way down the road.
