He has shown he can be a starter in this league. But if the Leafs are serious about making the playoffs, they need somebody with some experience to fall back on.
Dubnyk had glimpse where he looked like he may be our starter this year [based on prev. year play] and he still looks like a career backup.
Eric Francis on HNIC Hot Stove says Leafs have little-to-no interest in Khabibulin.
I don't believe him.
The Leafs will go for it this year, because I think they know that they might now have a chance like this again.
Lupul is scoring at >PPG pace. As is Kessel. They may lose Grabovski to free agency. Bozak is scoring at a career best pace.
For a team which has been looking for offense before this year, they finally have it with career years for 3 players in their top-6, and they might be sellers when they are this close?
I don't think so. I think Burke will add another piece. Weather it's Bulin or someone else, it remains to be seen.

you have to think he's considering it, but the extra year might be a deal-breaker, depending on who else is available
Looks like there is a shortage of goaltenders if TOR, SJS and CHI are all in need on one. Therefore I would be hesitant to trade Khabibulin until we can guarantee a replacement of equal or greater caliber. He isn't great, but I would prefer Khabibulin over an unknown quantity right now.
Best news for Oiler fans isn't Niemi, Reimer, and Crawford getting shelled tonight. It's Roloson getting shelled this afternoon. A lot of whispers that Roloson would be dealt as a rental but he looks beyond washed up.
I was shocked that a leafs fan posted something like this. I expected only to get gustavson for this package.
To Toronto:
Sam Gagner
Nikolai Khabibulin
3rd or 4th
To Edmonton:
Luke Schenn
Jonas Gustavson
minor salary dump
What a horrific trade. So we deal our 2nd line C who is having a career year at 22 years of age, Khabi and a 3rd for a pending UFA goalie who can walk on July 1st and Luke Schenn who has "potential" to be good. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.

That's the thing, who exactly may be available?
Harding maybe, Nabokov?
Khabibulin represents most of the market imo. Harding would cost too much I'd imagine, and I don't know if the Isles want to throw in the towel just yet.
The issue, IMO, with T.O acquiring Khabby is I imagine Burke may want to go big-game huntin again this off-season (Nash?) and that extra year reduces his flexiblity to do that.

I agree, the goalie market is pretty crummy right now, so any competent netminder who can play with some consistency has bloated value...even khabi and his extra year.

he claims that he's building from the back-end out though, and if that backend is failing, then he should, hypothetically speaking, be focused on shoring it up first.
you might be right though, he might be looking more long-term.
