Arguing about who has a better future in Alberta is funny, both
teams have bright futures because these teams are in some of the
best hockey markets in the world. (taxes, fans, great economy)
short term sure its Edmonton, the Flames still have one of the best
goalies on the planet and some underrated prospects on the way
up. Not to mention a solid group of defensemen. Blowing their
team up by shipping Iggy and Kipper (who both seem to want to
finish their career's in Calgary shows real class) might be too much
for fans in Calgary and the team to take. Trading these
kinds of players to contenders never nets high picks just a volume
of mid to late picks and prospects who may or may not work out.
Edmonton had to blow it up in order to shed a bunch of players that
did not fit or want to be in Edmonton.
Good luck Flames fans on your run for the playoffs, on that note
however I (still an Oilers fan) hope we beat you tommorow.
I am not saying the Flames should trade Iginla or Kipper, but to say all they would get is a mid to late pics is incorrect. Both players would bring 1st round pics ++
yes they would be first rounders but they would be mid to late first round picks not top 10 picks because of course contenders don't finish in the bottom 10 of the league, sorry if I wasn't more specific.
Looking forward to the BOA tonight.
Trading a known for a unknown/gamble especially when it comes to players like Iggy and Kipper is a very difficult thing to do, not all players work out (long history of this in the league)
think (from the Oilers) Robbie Schremp Andrew Cogliano Robert Nilsson etc.
every one of those guys looked good and went in the first round.
draft picks are just that a chance at an NHL'r the odds of getting a Iggy or a Kipper back are awfully low.

What is wrong with that? Better to have two or three mid to late first rounders than one or none. Even second and third rounders; the more pics you have the better chance you will get some players that will make it.
The idea of building through the draft is to accumulate pics to increase your odds.
Unless your team is brutal at drafting, but there has been improvement in that area in Calgary.
I understand in Edmonton they think you can only build with first overall pics.

Sorry I attempted to be civil and put forth a reasoned statement on the Flames board, trade Kipper and Iggy for draft picks, enjoy wandering the desert like we have.
When did I say the Flames should trade them?
I just stated that they would get first round pics ++ for each guy. Not mid to late pics like I thought SilverHaireDevil originally suggested.
Depth is overrated, its the aforementioned quantity of high end talent throughout your lineup that makes a difference. See the Chicago Blackhawks.
I found this pretty funny.
If you look at the Blackhawks, they have all the same high end talent they had when they ran the table - what they don't have is the depth throughout the lineup that they couldn't afford to keep.

Ya depth is so over rated that's why teams shore up those areas at the trade deadline

But what's wrong with that team now? Aside from the atrocious sieves they have in net, there is nothing stopping that team from contending even this year- hell, they managed to take the SC finalist to 7 games in a series they started off terrible in, just last year.

they dont have enough depth. thats plain and simple, they have elite level talent now they need the guys like moss, smith, hannan for injuries, and just solid play through out a game. BOSTON bruins are a great example... they dont have anyone outside of thomas that makes me want to give up half a roster to aquire BUT they have depth, and lots of it.
Depth on your NHL and AHL rosters allows you to overcome injuries slumps etc by having guys who can step in and play without your team falling off. that applies to reg season and play offs. Flames lack depth so when the above happens the drop in the standing usually follows. The key is your depth has to have a certain level of talent or it doesn't matter.

If anything the last month has shown they have depth. At least enough depth to not be in a minnesota position when they get a few injuries. We have nhl quality depth just not 2 line depth there is a difference.
It is nice to see the Flames prospects really stepping up this past couple of weeks. Bartschi impressed the hell out of everyone. The kid is the real deal. Can't wait for next season. Irving played well in his starts, too bad he got no support from his team mates. Gotta love to see two Flames prospects (Arnold and Gaudreau) leading the BU Eagles to their conference championship and Gaudreau earning MVP awards along the way. Also nice to see Brossoit, Ferland and Leach all stand tall for their respective junior squads. The Flames may not have those two first overall picks to hang their hat on, but they have some kids coming up that are overachievers and winners.
Let's be real; the potential and skill they have from their youth right now is something we can't compare to. Bartschi is really the only guy that would remotely compare to them. Right now management needs to continue to draft intelligently because we won't be getting a Hall or a RNH.
Really? I would say the most skilled player we have in the organization is John Gaudreau. Slick player, great vision, has a really good shot and just reads the play better than anyone I've seen a Flames uniform since Makarov. Really looking forward to him filling out. I see him as a Scott Gomez type player with the upside of being a Patrick Kane type talent. Keep an eye on this kid. He's pretty spectacular and makes something happen every shift.
EDM is slow... there gonna be a bad team for a long time... i live here and there is no respect for the players here, taylor hall had one bill board in the ****test area of town when he was drafted and i dont remember anything for RNH... Hall, eberle, and RNH are gonna want soo much to stay in this **** stain of a city... also they refuse to draft d man... smid whitney and gilbert are 3 or 4th dman at best... there just not a hockey smart team... plus they still think dubnyk will be an allstar goalie...
Lovely positive attitude son! Why don't you move if you are going to be so fn miserable? The city doesn't need you or want.

Hockey News, in their last issue, ranks Calgary's prospects #29, and Edmonton #1.
Calgary's prospects have improved over the last few years with a couple of decent drafts, but their propsects still lag behind pretty much everyone.

How many years has Edmonton had awesome prospects? When do these awesome prospects start to produce a team better than the bottom five? I think they have some really good potential talent right now, but those kids better learn to play the game pretty damn quickly or they're going to get killed. Hall has to learn to keep his head up. Same with Hopkins. Then the Oilers need to find some defense and a goaltender. Sure, they have three really good young players, but what about the rest of their system?

I disagree. I think they have some good prospects that have flown well below the radar. Even our own fans are down on them, even though they continue to show growth and development. I think we'll see that in the next couple of seasons. I wouldn't be completely writing off the Flames prospects yet.
