@Sk8 I wouldn't be as miffed over Holtby and George's unneeded public comments if Vokoun was playing to the high expectations most had when we got him. He simply has not. Generally I don't like seeing prospects getting undue mental strain. The mental side of the game is what holds them back. I feel by this time, they have the physical tools. Vokoun playing great eases the acceptance of it.
So we keep Vokoun - case closed. Backstrom to LTIR changes everything. We now don't have to sell.
If the Caps add salary, then it pretty much means Backstrom will be out until the playoffs.
Its the wise move regardless of who is added today. Whatever success the Caps have in the future is tied to Nicky being healthy. I am more than fine not seeing Nicky in a Caps uniform until September, forget the playoffs.

I figured that was a given anyways since he hasn't even skated in weeks/months.
Ill be interested to see of they do anything of substance today. I have my doubts that Mafki will pay the prices he'll need to pay to make a difference. We'll see. Job is on the line if you ask me. He's done it before at the deadline...time to do it again if they want in.
I don't think that means they have something locked in to do, I have to believe it's just to give them more flexibility. Could take him off tomorrow if they don't use the cap space, but this way they don't need to trade Hamrlik (or Wideman or Knuble) if they want to add someone, which means they can't have that used against them in negotiations for those players.
Well I am off to do a survey in a hospital for the majority of the day so I will count on you fine folks to keep me updated. Here is hoping my cell battery holds up.

Who knows, though. Just please, no rentals.
I agree with this. It enables trades to be made in a different order than they would have to be made if they didn't have the flexibility. Given the Backstrom updates/lack of updates, it is likely he's out until the playoffs, but until it's after 3pm and that LTIR space is being used this is just a negotiation tool and added flexibility for today.
Ok..we give up a 1st, a top prospect and one or two young player.
We get back a WINGER making nearly $8 million who is WAY overpaid and signed long term.
So we'd automatically lose Semin in the offseason along with the kings randsom we'd give up and would absolutely NOT address any needs (2C and gritty vet dman)
This isn't fantasy hockey we are talking about here.
