Mikael Granlund remains top prospect for Minnesota Wild

Hockey's Future wrote an article on our prospect depth

I'm reading it now, will edit in with thoughts. Wanted everyone to see this before it gets posted somewhere else.

In other words I wanted to be able to claim "FIRST!"

Rank Name Position Grade Last Rank Change
1 Mikael Granlund C 8.0B 01 0
2 Charlie Coyle C/RW 8.0C 05 +3
3 Jonas Brodin D 7.5B 04 +1
4 Marco Scandella D 7.0C 02 -2
5 Matt Hackett G 7.0C 03 -2
6 Zack Phillips C 7.0C 08 +2
7 Jason Zucker LW 6.5B 06 -1
8 Johan Larsson C/RW 6.5B 07 -1
9 Brett Bulmer RW 6.5C 14 +5
10 Mario Lucia LW 7.0D 21* +11
11 Justin Falk D 6.5C 15 +4
12 Cody Almond C 6.5C 11 -1
13 Erik Haula C/LW 7.0D 13 0
14 Tyler Cuma D 7.0D 10 -4
15 Darcy Kuemper G 6.5C 16 +1
16 Nate Prosser D 6.5C 18 +2
17 Johan Gustafsson G 6.5C 21* +4
18 Kristopher Foucault LW 6.5D 19 +1
19 Carson McMillan C/RW 6.0C 21* +2
20 Mikko Lehtonen LW 7.0F 20 0
*list only goes to 20, 21* = not ranked in last list

Honorable Mentions include:
Jarod Palmer, David McIntyre, Chad Rau, Justin Fontaine, Chay Genoway, Sean Lorenz

My thoughts:

Nice to see Lucia and Gustafsson crack the list. Still don't agree on some of the grades for some of the guys(Namely Brodin, Hackett, Phillips, and Larsson), but oh well, it still looks like a bright future for us fans.

Oh it feels good not having Gillies in the top 5.

So Lucia moved past being a 'Other Notables'?

About time he passed Mikko Lehtonen.

I would still like to see (even though it's technically a "lower" grade) Granlund given an 8.5C. Honestly, I'd rather see a 9.0C (or even D) but you'd have to see my old rant about the application of the grading system to see that. I think it would be hard to argue that Granlund is incapable of becoming a Joe Thornton or Eric Staal caliber player. It might be quite unlikely, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility.

Love how Lehtonen is still considered a prospect of the Wild.

Same here, but maybe that's just optimistic bias on all our parts. It seems that, aside from a couple #1/2 overall nobody gets B's.

Not a bad read.

Not that the grades actually mean much to me, but are the grades updated as the prospect progresses? I have to think that Larsson would be graded higher than a 6.5B after captaining the Gold Medal team at the WJC's and tearing it up in the SEL this season.

I am obviously biased but I think Larsson is extremely underrated...which is fine since he won't have as large expectations, something I worry about for Granlund.

IIRC the grades are updated each time an article like this comes out (twice a year?). I'd have to cross check to see if any of the guys had their ratings bumped up or down.

I don't think any ratings changed this time, just the order of some of the guys.

I remember the last time the article came out, Zucker was upgraded from a 6.5C to a 6.5B, IIRC. Larsson was a 7.0C and was "upgraded" to 6.5B or something. I might have those switched around.

Only new ratings done this time are the guys who weren't ranked last time, I think. I could totally be wrong though.

I just pulled up the September Rankings. The changes I see:

Player-Old Rank-New Rank

Zucker-7.0C-6.5B
Cuma-7.0C-7.0D
Almond-6.5B-6.5C
Prosser-6.0C-6.5C

The numbers and letters are a garbage system anyway, I don't take them for much worth to be honest. As far as the prospect ranking goes, I'd say it doesn't look terrible. The only real case I see being made is Larsson moving up higher, but it depends on where you think Larsson's upside is.

Okay that makes sense for the bottom three on the list, but Zucker's ceiling dropped, really? How so?

I'd like a word with the writer at some point. Sometimes he pops in on this board, hopefully he does the same sometime soon.

Not a bad list I must say.

Also, I'm wondering if the author will post in this thread.

can't believe I wrote Cliff again and no one caught it

Anyhow, as I've said and shouldn't have, I just don't love the grading system and don't put much time into adjusting them or arguing for them.

I do think it's an exciting time for Wild fans.

The only one I have a problem with is Larsson. I'd have him #3 or #4. The rest are within a spot or two of where I'd have them.

i think lucia should be at least a 7c or a 7.5d i think he'll surprise a lot of people.

brodin 8.0b for me the kid is so poised and so good 1 on 1 i keep bringing up the russia game and the one period where russia brought it (3rd) he stopped like 7 scoring chances it was nuts

With all respect, I pull the homer card here. He hasn't proven anything else, but that he can dominate what I assume is Canada's second highest junior competition. He has still long ways to prove he can make it into NHL in my eyes.
