I remember in his first season with the Rangers, he and Del Zotto both seemed like very promising defensive prospects. Del Zotto obviously had the better season, but Gilroy did enough to turn some heads, including mine.
It is a minor upgrade imo, and that is totally fine for a 5-6th dman trade. What else should we expect to get in that position? If Gilroy chips in a little more offensively and doesn't make any more mistakes than Lee made, why not?
With the way our d-corps has been set up, I think this trade hinges on how well he meshes with the Big Rig.
Phillips worked well with Chara and Volchenkov, and eventually Lee, but sucked balls with everyone else we tried. If he works out, Phillips could make him look like a top-4 guy and if they don't mesh, then we have an open spot on our bottom pairing next season.
Basically, Murray felt that the bottom pairing wasn't working (and it hasn't this year) so he made change.
