The Carle situation is starting to remind me of what happened with Leino last year. The player's impending free agency is a topic that gets discussed ad nauseum throughout the season, and Homer says, "We like Leino/Carle, he likes it here, we're hoping we can come to some sort of agreement on a contract." All the while, it's obvious the player is looking to hit pay dirt in a big way, will likely get a juicy offer from some other team, and the Flyers will (smartly) elect to go in a different direction.

I agree with your comparison. It's silly to think that Holmgren is tipping his hand in any way by indicating that he wants to resign Carle. What do people expect him to say? "We are counting the minutes until the end of the season, so we won't have to watch Matt Carle skate aimlessly and turn over pucks like a Pez dispenser in our uniform anymore"?

I dont think the Flyers should be basing their free agency plan on Suter hitting the market and signing with the Flyers. Just setting themselves up for dissapointment.

why not?
they need a top pairing defenseman and Suter is their guy. should they expect him to hit the open market and sign with them? no, obviously not, but that doesnt mean they shouldnt be targeting him, especially with what Suter has said.
Unless things change between him and Nashville, he should be their #1 priority going into July 1st
