We're going to war with what we have. Players step up differently in the playoffs. This year will show who is made out of what.
We are a first place team, but we are not perfect. No team is perfect. Even the ones that win the Stanley Cup.
Grit is important down the stretch and deep into the playoffs, Scott is cheap insurance if a D man goes down and we need size/experience. Its not just about him.
Dubi saying he's going to go in with a chip on his shoulder, he knows what he has to do. This could have been a good scare to get him going. He has a 22 game season + playoffs to show us if he means business.
We have the BEST GOALIE IN THE WORLD. Don't under estimate how important this is.
We got to this point, and we will continue from here on it.
This is what we're going to war with. Join along if you believe...
I posted this on February 15th:
After years of clamoring for a (mostly) home grown squad we finally have one to watch. They're the hardest working, and karguably the best team in the entire league. And the standings say that as of right now they are just that. As currently constructed should have a shot at the cup for the next three to five years. I understand at some point a move may have to be made. I get that..I really do.
However this team, especially in light of how they are performing, deserve the chance to go to war together come April, exactly as they are currently constructed. And we as fans deserve a chance to see what they are capable of in the post season.
Every single player on that list would adress a need. A 6th/7th d-man who's NOT a worthless fighter. Secondary scoring in McGinn or Kostistyn. A faceoff-specialist, defensive center in Gaustad. Extremly important when the going gets tough.
what would you have given up for each of those players? Do you think Gaustad was worth a first rounder? If we wanted Kostitsyn, we would've just kept wolski. Idk if you could really call McGinn "secondary scoring"
Funny you'd mention Plato. I just read the Republic again and remembered how much I hate him.
I don't think the Stanley Cup is made out of paper. It's not made out of hugs and kisses and rainbows either, because what is all the chemistry in the world going to get us if Gaborik and Callahan are the only ones scoring and Lundqvist has to go against Crosby and Malkin? You'd do good to realize that.
You would. You're almost becoming a parody of yourself at this point. Trust the experts, for once.
So, because of one good season we're a freaking dynasty now? We'll compete every year? We're having a fantastic year so far and we have a shot at the cup - WE NEED TO DO THE BEST WE CAN TO GET THAT CUP.
Who the hell knows what future seasons will look like? What if this is a flash in the pan? Look at Edmonton and Carolina for example. You need to do the best with what you've got at the moment. This is/WAS our window. Let's hope it's enough.
Glad we didn't move any high picks for marginal acquisitions.... With the manner in which the Rangers have been drafting in recent years, our picks are more valuable to the organization than mediocre/average additions at the deadline. None of the players reported to be available were going to be difference makers for us. Now we just need some of our players to step up their games (Richards, Dubinsky, Boyle, etc). Would like to see better contributions for Feds & Rupp once the playoffs roll around too.

Still waiting on you to point out what exactly we should have done, realistically. Who was available that would have actually helped?

Obviously I agree with you.
Great post. Sums up my feelings exactly. I'd venture to guess that the sell everything for this year crowd is generally younger, and don't remember the dark ages. That's not to say there aren't younger posters who did learn those lessons, I'm not old myself by any means, but it just seems that those years don't resonate with some of that ilk right now.
Breathing a huge sigh of relief that whatever the "massive offer" was for Nash, Howson turned it down. John Scott seems a bit odd, but it's a 5th, so whatever. I would have liked to have added some forward depth with Wolski and Eeyore gone, but the prices were pretty steep (although I still contend that AK might have been worth the risk - but again, whatever). At this point, I'm interested to see who, if anyone gets a call up as the spare forward. Newbury? Zucc? Deveaux?

You do realize that the Rangers have virtually everybody locked up for next season and cap space as well???
Adress our secondary scoring, get a good reliable defensive center. Get a good 6/7th d-man.
NOT get John Scott who's an enforcer, D-MAN MIND YOU, and plays 3 minutes a night.
That's not exact. Stop saying "secondary scoring" over and over again and tell me who we should have gotten. What "good" players were available for a fair price?

Who knows how they'll play next year? Do you know? Look at Gaboriks first season with us and his second. Players have down-years. Nobody knows what'll happen in the future.
