Habs started out strong. After 10 minutes, Florida adjusted to the Habs' chip-it-out-pass-it-ahead-dump-it-in system. Cunneyworth adjusted by telling his guys to work harder. The end.
The "lack of effort" line is going to be used again, but the problem isn't there. The problem is that the Habs simply do not play in a way where they will usefully control the puck. So they're always chasing, always getting there too late, always looking like they're doing nothing when the problem is that they're doing the wrong thing. Always the same, always simplest play, always easy to adjust to.
The team's lack of a transition game is completely, utterly sad and it's all because they don't even try. They have only one play to get it out of the zone, and once Florida took that away they were able to bottle the Habs in their own zone pretty much permanently.
Meanwhile, they don't have an offensive zone scheme that's able to prevent Florida from simply collecting their dump-in and turning it around. They just try to bang bodies down low even if the puck is long gone.
Oh, and how many pointless long pass attempts have there been? Most of those resulted in needless turnovers. I've even seen the Habs, with the puck in their zone and no pressure for once, attempt a three-line pass rather than skate with it. Predictably, it failed. It's like the stretch pass is the only way they know how to get across the neutral zone now.
Sigh. Same scenario over and over and over and over and over again. And we'll only see more of this until the season is over.
Sure, we can lose all we want and end up 29th in the league, but you know damn well that come lottery day, a team above us will win and push us back to 3rd overall.

Nope...but when your defense looks like the Habs, then you gotta play defensive, if you don't well, then you're playing Cunneyworth hockey and how's that working out?

It's not that they don't "get" it; it's nigh-impossible not to "get" hockey this simple. And it's not that they don't "like" it, though I can't imagine any of them is very fond of it. It's just that playing that way is never going to work at the NHL level.
Hockey is about puck possession and the Habs are giving the puck away every chance they get, looking for puck position or a stretch pass. Any good coach who's half-awake will recognize what the Habs are trying to do and -- since they are eminently predictable -- turn the Habs' tactics against them, by simply collecting the puck when the Habs give it up and rapidly sending it the other way.
Martin may have been boring to some, but at least there was puck support and transition and options for players and actual structure. There's essentially no structure anymore. This is kindergarten hockey -- the simplest possible play every single time.
