Helene St. James was the first person to get information out of Holland after the Quincey trade... I hope she's accurate in what she says in that tweet.
conditional 7th means "hey stevie, do you want him for free?"
i like this trade. no reason to have commodore around. with GR out of the PO hunt, smith can be up as 7th and playing from time to time. he looked ready to play at least 3rd line for now.
if true should've done future consideration we need those consideration

She also reported that Osgood wasn't retiring last summer.
Pretty much signals the end of the line for Kindl. Smith will pass him up very quickly. The third paring will likely be Quincey-Smith while Ericsson is out of the lineup.
I don't understand this at all. Holland talks about how important depth is, and then trades a perfectly competent, response-in-his-own end, physical D-man for a condition 7th round pick?
Also, after he said he was absolutely done acquiring defensemen? It's pointless to bring Smith up as an extra, it's a waste of his talents to sit in the press box every night. Unless he's putting Smith over Kindl.
Either way...a strange move that weakens the defensive corps at a time when he was focused on improving it. Unless he's bringing in another D-man. Which would be kind of silly. Ericsson is only out a month. I can't see us upgrading Commodore, since it'd just be for a 7th or 8th defenseman...
Weird move unless something is coming down the pipe.

I actually remember that now that you mention it! Haha.
Holland is on TSN saying that Smith and Kindl both surpassed Commie on the DET depth chart, and that's why he was moved. Awesome. Maybe they really will bring Smith into the mix sooner than later!
Holland basically said he'd rather play some young, eager d-men down the stretch and into the playoffs if need be over Commodore. It sounded like he traded Commodore as a courtesy as Commodore basically wanted to play out the rest of the season as a showcase for a contract for next year. Decent thing to do, really.

He is. Smith is playing tomorrow vs. Buffalo over Kindl.

Commodore was our 9th D on the depth chart going into the playoffs. He isn't gonna play at all down the stretch and they don't think he'll be able to jump in and do a good job in the playoffs. I think I agree with that.
Btw, the conditional 7th rd pick is our next superstar

Quincey-Smith will be a nice defensive pairing. Abrasive, big, good skaters. Both have some offensive skill although Smith is much more highly regarded as a point producer.
I'd like to point out the last time the Wings and Bolts were exchanging players (Ciccarelli, Burr, etc) we were just about to have a 62 win season followed by back-to-back Cups....so, you know...jus' sayin'
I realize Commadore is a best a 6th defensemen on this team, but he is big, physical, and good depth in case of injuries, and could have at least warranted a 5th rounder. Holland better be up to something for the reasoning behind this.
I realize he wouldn't be in our top 6 or 7 but I still don't get this deal, since the only way this doesnt look like a favor to Yzerman is if we were clearing cap space, but we already ahve an abundance of that. Guess it's either a favor to Commodore or Yzerman.

I feel a bit bad for him since he wasn't that bad - not that great either but an "ok" defenseman. This was probably a good thing for him after all, I assume he'll get more ice time and all. Unfortunately we now lack physical essence more than we did. Thanks Commie and good luck!
And by the way, I'm still waiting for that top 6 guy, Kenny!

My reaction was similar. Every other playoff team is trying to add veteran depth on D, we're shipping a serviceable guy out for virtually nothing. Makes you wonder why he was signed at all. I like Smith a lot, but his role is different.
Oh well, hoping this is a prelude to something else
