Maybe I'm just too low on Gilbert, but I do not like the value in this trade at all. The concept is fine. The play style swap is fine. The one for one trade of Schultz is fine. I just think he's worth more than that.
It's really hard for NHL players with multiple years left on their contracts to be moved. At least Gilbert's coming back to the place he grew up, so it's not like he's being forced out to someplace he's never really been before. Poor Schultz is going to be out in Edmonton long enough he'll probably have to relocate the family too.
I think this trade will help the team, but I can't help but feel bad for Schultz. I wasn't his biggest fan on the ice but he seems like a really nice guy that knows nothing but the Wild. I hope he does well in Edmonton. And I hope Gilbert can help the D move the puck up ice.
As much as Schultz has sucked the last two years, I still feel he is better than Gilbert. While I don't think we got "bent over" on this trade, I will say that I am not pleased with only getting Tom Gilbert back. Would have preferred getting Edmonton's 2nd rounder instead.
