Leaf fan here and was wondering if you could provide some info on this Ashton fellow. I have heard he was a big forward that can skate and has good hands. Do you know if he is physical or is willing to drop the gloves? Is there anything else that you all liked/disliked about him?
As for Aulie, I think you will like him. Big body, good reach, willing to fight and is a stay at home defender. Had a good year last year but with Gardiner coming in there wasn't room for him. He deserves time in the NHL.

Scouting Comments:
"Carter is a solid prototypical power forward; he knows the game and really is astute at the power-play and penalty kill, offensive and defensive parts of his game." - NHL CSS Director EJ McGuire
Strengths:
Ashton plays a meat and potatoes pro style game that should translate well to the NHL. He plays a solid north-south game and will go into the high traffic areas to score goals and make plays. He has a long frame that is just beginning to fill out and is exceptional at protecting the puck down low in the offensive zone. He is deadly as a finisher from anywhere below the dots in the offensive zone. In terms of intangibles, Ashton is a very hard worker who had the best VO2 max rating at the Scouting Combine in 2009.
Weaknesses:
His offensive game is still in its infancy and he's just learning how to use his linemates to create scoring chances. As a consequence, he needs a playmaking centerman to truly be effective offensively.
Projection:
Carter in still a work in progress, but the foundation is there for him to develop into an NHL power forward who will have a long and successful career. He may need one season in the AHL with Norfolk before that happens. His father, Brent, was a solid 25 goal, 50-55 point a year man in the NHL and the apple doesn't appear to fall that far from the tree. Carter projects to be a solid second line winger who will do the dirty work for his linemates and bang home 20-30 goals a season like NHLers Ryan Malone or Dustin Penner.
Also, this is from an Admirals season tickets holder:

Good luck!
Compares to Ryan Malone. Imo he's a very very safe prospect in that he will make it as an NHL player. I think he tops out as a 2nd liner who can score 20-25 goals but time will tell if he gets there or becomes a grinder at the next level. You heard right as he has good hands down low around the net. That's where he'll get most of his goals. He can move well for a big kid and he's physical, good along the boards, throws the big hits, and can fight. He has the prototypical power forward package. Physically he's ready for the NHL, and has challenged for a spot the past training camps, but he's still working on improving his defensive game and playing with consistency every night. It's been a successful rookie year in the AHL for him and all leaf fans should really like this guy.
Thanks for the great info! A lot of Leaf fans are disappointed by the lack of big moves by Burke at the deadline but I'm really looking forward to the team he is building for 2-3 years from now and onward. I just hope he gets to stick around to enjoy the fruits of his labour. I'm glad he didn't make any big moves sacrificing that team for a playoff run this year. Good luck to you in the final stretch!
He's had ups and downs this year but last year he was awesome down the stretch playing huge minutes for us. Good skater, not a guy who is going to go out of his way to run over people but when he hits, he hits to hurt. Not much offensive game, just a very, very solid, safe player.
TB needed the size on D. Just watch all the games where Malkin made us look awful. No pop in the back. Now we got it. With all those picks to this offseason I see us adding more and a Goalie. TB will be back people. Just you wait.
Leaf fan here... Aulie is a beaut, I dont know how good this Ashton guy is but my heart sank when I heard Aulie had been traded. Good Luck guys, you added an amazing man and great player to your team today. Aulie will surpass your expectations...
I'm surprised by this trade. While I like Aulie and think he'll be a good fit for this team, giving up Ashton is an overpayment in my eyes. That said, I look forward to seeing Aulie on our blueline hopefully for years to come.
Reason I like it is because we have lots of offensive prospects but zero defense. We had to give up something to get some youth on defense. Just happened to be one of our best prospects for good defensemen that fills the need now. I think it's a even trade.

Especially with Conacher, Namestnikov, and Killorn knocking.
Aulies in his sophomore slump this season. He'll be a good dman for you. Dont expect much offense from him, but do expect solid D when he fully develops.
Apparently Ashton Guarantees the Marlies the Calder Cup.
At least according to several posters in the trade forum thread.
I'm sure Norfolk will miss Ashton's 16 points since November 18th. Not like the Ads have two top 5 scores and the leading scorer on defense or anything.
Congrats to Tampa fans on getting a player that should be a joy to watch develop. It's crucial for a good six man rotation to have dmen like him. He wont let you down with his play because he plays a smart/simple game. Mohammed Aulie will be missed!
