I knew Chevy should have asked for Patrick Sharp!

Gonna miss ya, Handlebars.

I really liked him... Two very good picks in a supposedly deep draft never hurts though.

It's likely that any roster player we would have gotten back would not be an upgrade over what we have. For a middling UFA, this is a better return than a third liner.

I'm not sure why some are so short sighted. Chevy held to his word (I respect his integrity) and will continue to build towards the future.

Not many roster players were even moved today, clearly a deal like that was not out there to be had or I am quite sure Cheveldayoff would have done it. And we were not taking back players on expiring contracts, so that limits things even further.

I would rather this deal than what the Habs got for Gill. I like having our own picks so we can make our own selections or use these picks combined (for example) to trade for a player or move up in the draft, whichever. I like the flexibility we have from this.

Also, as others have mentioned, Hal Gill is better defensively and on the PK than Oduya, not to mention Gill has a Stanley Cup ring. Gill fills a very key role for Nashville.

Nonetheless, I personally like our deal and am just fine with a 2nd and 3rd round pick, I expected ONE, not both.

Lastly, again, and it's worth repeating, I think, trades for players to this point in the regular season and today on trade deadline day were very rare... what does that tell you? I know what it tells me.

I am sad to see him go but it was a great return for a rental player.

People around here will concur that Johnny was very good for us this season.
Toews and Hjalmarsson are out with concussions (With no timetable on return)
Montador is out with concussion and speculation he is done for year

Our current C depth = Kruger - Morrison - Bolland - Mayers

We have the 40th and 41st ranked goalies in NHL in sv PCT

The Hawks have a 21 yr old rookie on 1st pairing (Olsen) and 20 yr old rookie on 2nd pairing (Leddy)

No depth on roster , Worst PK/PP in NHL

THis team is going nowhere. Needed a top 4 dman , A G upgrade and a #2 C

Got none of those things and threw away 2 good assets on worthless rental #6 dman

Hawks should have sold and got what they could for guys like Brunette/Emery/Mayers and brought up kids from Rockford to finish year

Not going to lie. Once they had announced that O was headed to Chicago I started chanting Toews, Toews, Toews!!! but when they said it was just O and nothing else....................
but I am happy with the return. Good structural team building will help us in the long run.

Yeah to make a trade both sides have to agree to it. Chevy wanted a scoring forward but couldn't get one. A 2nd and a 3rd are great return for a 5/6 D-man that's a pending UFA. Either get that or lose him for nothing in the off-season. You can't just fabricate a trade and complain that we should have traded him for a roster player when you have no idea if that was possible.

Again this gives the Jets a ton of ammo to work with and opens up tones of options. They can trade up in this draft knowing they have lots of picks in 2013, or they can trade those picks in the summer after the draft, or keep all those picks and bring in a ton of top picks and stock the system over the next 2 years. Ether way it opens up a lot of options for this team moving forward, getting a roster player now would not have given them the same slew of options.

I hope that we can keep our critical players under contract so that we don't lose them as RFA's.

You need to come to grips with the fact that this is a new org, not one that has failed to make the playoffs in all but one season.

There will be no mortgaging the future for a modest current gain. The only roster player we were going to get for Oduya that would be an upgrade on our forwards would have been one on an expiring contract - a waste of potential assets and organizational depth.

Why do you think the Thrashers never had any depth or could make the playoffs? Whether you like it or not this is the organizations philosophy and will be moving forward. You can ***** about it all you want but it is not going to change.

I'm sure peoples tune will be different in 3-5 years when we have a perenial playoff team and players who are NHL ready on the farm.

You can have David if you want a Toews that badly

Too bad the picks couldn't be this year, the Hawks are struggling lately and could miss the playoffs.

I am pretty certain if they were for this year it would have been a 3 and a 4 , the value of future picks diminishes , so I really much rather would delay the picks and get higher ones , as we've done.

In 2013 it stands to be 3 seconds and 2 thirds , Chevy is building according to plan.

What you can expect from Johnny O:

+'s: Excellent skater, gets to top speed quickly when lugging the puck, good 1v1, plays pretty strong along the wall despite not being very big, sound positionally, solid on the PK, makes good pinches, great asset 4v4, generally makes a good first pass out of the zone when given time.

-'s: Makes some awful decisions with the puck (especially when teams get physical with him), doesn't understand how to generate offense from the point, soft shooter, turnover machine when he's off his game, doesn't have much presence in front of the net, offers zero in the way physicality or nastiness.

Really depends what the Hawks need. He's pretty reliable when he's on his game, but has to be paired with a physical partner. He's pretty much the last guy you'll want if you're looking to make your D tougher to play against.

Only way you get a roster player, who is not a third line rental (ufa), for oduya is if you have some picks moving with him.

otherwise your probably using mind control because i don't think any gm takes 5th-6th ufa dman for a roster forward with a contract.

I would have liked to see a roster player too, but you can't argue that it's not good value, just maybe not the value you'd wanted.

Are we sure the leville compensation pick is next years? I've heard it's this years draft from some other people
