You need to come to grips with the fact that this is a new org, not one that has failed to make the playoffs in all but one season.
There will be no mortgaging the future for a modest current gain. The only roster player we were going to get for Oduya that would be an upgrade on our forwards would have been one on an expiring contract - a waste of potential assets and organizational depth.
Why do you think the Thrashers never had any depth or could make the playoffs? Whether you like it or not this is the organizations philosophy and will be moving forward. You can ***** about it all you want but it is not going to change.
I'm sure peoples tune will be different in 3-5 years when we have a perenial playoff team and players who are NHL ready on the farm.
Are we sure the leville compensation pick is next years? I've heard it's this years draft from some other people
Not positive , it would a good question to pose to the IC guys , however I think you have a deadline to sign the player and if not you get the additional pick , and I think the deadline may not mesh timewise for 2012?

Either way works though .
Aug.15th is the dead line to have eligible NCAA picks signed. The compensation is the 2012-13 draft.

This is a confusing, but relatively simple and common mistake.
For all European and Junior players (CHL) the deadline for signing players before their rights are lost is June 1, two years after being drafted. So for 09 picks that were drafted out of junior or Europe, the deadline is June 1, this year.
For college players such as Daultan Leveille, the deadline for signing players before their rights are lost is August 15th, the year after they graduate. This can vary for players since that depends on when they start their college career (such as players like Tanner Lane and Jason Kasdorf who are in USHL and will go to college afterwords). For Leveille, the Jets rights expire for him on August 15th of this year.
Now, for unsigned 1st round picks, a compensatory pick is awarded in the 2nd round in the same slot where they where drafted (so for us, the 29th pick of the 2nd round) in the next draft following their right's expiring. So since Junior and European have their rights expire right before a draft, the comp pick is awarded immediately that summer. But for college players, they will have to wait till the next draft, in this case it will be the 2013 for Leveille since his rights do not expire until August 15, AFTER the 2012 draft.
Hope that made sense.

(you are saying that the ownership only took basketball seriously right?)
They also fought a lengthy lengthy court battle over control of the ASG amongst themselves, during which budget was slashed and very little attention was paid to what was happening as Don Waddell destroyed the organization.

Nah, I'm saying that the ownership was worse than crap. If crap could crap, it would be that. It would be the crap that crap craps.
But it's also true that they only took basketball seriously. Or as seriously as an ownership group that fought internally more than highschool girls could.

Oduya had been struggling of late, this was a no brainer. Would have liked to have gotten a serviceable player back that could help us out now, but the draft picks will do.
Props to Chevy, great trade. In my opinion the Hawks overpaid for Johnny. Two picks for someone who was probably walking on July 1 is a good days work.
We got Oduya and a first round draft pick (Burmistrov) for Ilya Kovalchuk when the Thrashers did their trade back in 2010. Now it's a second and third round draft pick. The trades seem to be degenerating into lesser deals

It will be interesting to see that Kovalchuk trade tree in a couple years.
Sad to see Johnny O go but getting those picks are great.
Agreed. I see where Duke & Romang are coming from - you grow attached to these guys after watching them all year. I wish the best to Johnny O where ever he goes.

Actually, the first round pick we got from NJ was a late rounder that was used to get Buff in a later deal. We already had the early pick for Burmi in the bag.
As far as this trade, it is a good return for someone who was gone. I also think it is a good deal for Chicago who don't necessarily need picks and are making a cup run.

Correct
The 2nd rounder in Kovalchuk deal (#54) went to Hawks as well in Buff trade
