One of these days, I would like to understanding conditioning at the pro sports level.
It's been five months since the beginning of the season. Johansen has been scratched a lot. It's amazing how much strength and conditioning you can do if you focus on it, even if it's only 4 hours a week.
I've been reading that he looks taller than the listed 6'3". Is it possible that he has had a growth spurt?

It's my understanding that players rarely add strength/size during the season. Most times when I see guys discuss their training regimen it is to add strength/speed/size in the offseason and then just try to maintain it during the course of the season. I'll bet Johansen was working more in the weight room while he was scratched repetitively.
Remember even seguin was sat for a while in Boston.
Yeah....there is a huge difference between Boston and Columbus. Boston sat Seguin so he could see the game from above and learn things from his teammates. Yeah...with Columbus, we don't exactly have a lineup of guys who play the right way...Fact is the coach sucks, the kid looked like he was NHL ready at the beginning of the season, now he looks like an OHL player. He doesn't skate with the puck, he passes as soon as he gets the puck, his linemates aren't exactly NHL caliber and he isn't even playing the position he was drafted at.
On twitter there is this annoying guy I follow named Rob Mixer, not as much of a ****** now as he was, but he talked to Richards today his tweet says, "Talked with Todd Richards today about having the younger players (Atkinson, for example) in prominent roles as the year progresses" Richards response was, "Richards on Cam: "The projection for him is to be a first or second-line wing. When we call him up, we give him an opportunity there."
Yeah, just like a Columbus media person, don't talk about the things we actually want to hear about. Fact of the matter is Richards is a dumbass coach, this guy isn't some high profile coach who is respected, this is a fool who was dumped in Minnesota a couple of years ago, yet we are going to trust that this guy has even the slightest clue how to coach at the NHL level? Yeah, I call BS and I am happy this guy isn't even going to be considered in the offseason.
Howson doesnt do the roster, it is a coach work and he isnt horrible, IMO he is good. But Richards is ECHL coach and I hope he will out to the end of the season or maximum after the season.

Agreed 100%. How do you know he wont be considered?

In any sport at any level, a player is going to be in peak shape at the beginning of the season. The constant pounding, whether in practice or in games, is going to cause anyone to start wasting away. In-season nutrition and conditioning is about maintaining strength and weight.
In my senior year of high school football, I lost about 20% of my body weight in a season that lasted...I think it was 15 or 16 weeks. 10 regular season, 3 playoff, 2 or 3 of two-a-days. I was eating anywhere from 4,500 to 6,000 calories a day and couldn't keep weight on.
It's also important to note that I wasn't actually getting stronger during the year, just more efficient. We'd do lifting and sprints on Saturday mornings and Monday afternoons, extremely intense practices on Tuesday and Wednesday, walkthrough on Thursday, and games on Friday.
Unfortunately, training camp and the regular season is a horrible time to attempt to get into shape. If a player doesn't come to camp in NHL shape, he's not going to be in NHL shape for the entire season. Only a dedicated offseason conditioning program can fix that.
Since there isn't a player movement thread I thought I'd post this here. It's off topic so if a mod wants to move it feel free....
I happened to jump on the CBJ site today and read the notes from today's practice. I found it maddening that there was a comment from Richards that Cam Atkinson is playing on the 2nd line because that's where he is expected to end up. So I couldn't help but voice my frustration in a comment. How is it that Cam should play on the 2nd line when he's hopeful to be there yet Ryan Johansen is playing on the 4th line - as a wing no less - yet is expected to be a top 6 center?
What the hell is going on with this team? Maybe I'm just over sensitive but to me that screams incompetance and cluelessness. Why not have Johansen playing in his future role. put him at 2nd line center and play out the string. Give him 15 min per night and see where we are at. Noooo Letestu plays 2nd line center when he's more like a 4th line guy. What a crock of crap
cam is 23, RyJo is 19/20? can't remember....but Cam is a bit more mature albeit smaller than RyJo...perhaps that's a part of it? I still see us doing ok with RyJo's building...still on the seguin track i believe...
Part of the problem with conditioning on the Jackets is the balance between needing to heal/recover and conserve energy for the next game with also practicing and playing at a high enough level. I think a lot of the players err on the side of resting up way too much for games and trying to heal minor injuries.
Johansen can't hit the gym for hours then find out he has to play that night since another forward has the flu or was injured in warmups.
Johansen is a late bloomer to begin with. Wasn't he still 5'9 or so when he was playing in the BCHL at age 16? Perhaps he still is growing or at least just maintaining his body weight is a challenge through the season.
If Ryan does have conditioning issues, should Richard throw the kid under the bus and say that? Or say he doesn't think he's big/strong enough or working hard enough (if that's true)?
I'd rather see a prospect not get ice time only because he's a 1st round pick unless he earns it. Richards is the one on the ice and knows what's going on.
Edit: One question, if the Falcons make the playoffs, could Johansen be sent down to the AHL once the Winterhawks are out of the WHL playoffs?

Playing center is difficult for a 19 year old rookie. His Faceoff percentage is only 35%. That's the lowest of all the centers. Letestu's is 51.3%.
There's no reason to drop Johansen in the deep end of the pool and see if he can swim like other CBJ prospects. Let him get adjusted to playing wing before having to worry about faceoffs and defensive coverage as a center. There's nothing wrong with bringing up along slowly and giving him more responsibilities as he's ready for them.
For whatever reasons, the coaching staff doesn't think he's ready.

I think the biggest knock on Johan is his conditioning. That coupled with his strength is making it very difficult for him to play up to his size every shift. I think both coaches have noticed it. This summer Johan will need to work on both those things and by next year hopefully we wont be having this conversation anymore.
Noel wasn't ever a serious candidate, I can't fathom that a guy who is clearly a dumbass could be a serious candidate.
You are not short on conviction Doug that's for sure, Noel is doing well in WGP, that should count for something..
Back to the thread, Johansen is at least in the games, there is some credence to playing him on the 4th line, hell, he’s just a kid. I'd rather have him get 8 minutes on the 4th line than no minutes in the press box.. That said I would give him a shift now and then on the top lines, even the first line as center with Nash, there’s nothing to lose, the remainder of the season is just practice.
Cam is getting his shot because he's 4 years ahead of Johansen.
Why are some of you so intent on rushing him? Let the guy grind it out, get used to the game. He's not the first 'future star' to be stuck as a scratch or get little ice time.

lol, why the hell did they keep him if they weren't going to play him. You can say he had nothing left to learn in the WHL, well he certainly can't learn anything in the press box watching the Blue Jackets play. Don't keep him up if you aren't going to play him. I'm sick of hearing people mention the Boston model, Columbus isn't Boston, Columbus doesn't have the talent that Boston has/had. The worst part is, there is a huge difference between Johansen Before January and Johansen now, and that isn't a good thing.
People want to say that the ice time should be earned, well Cam probably has earned a shot up here, but what about R.J. Umberger and Vermette and Letestu, and Gillies, none of those guys have earned a damn thing this year yet they are still tossed in the lineup in the top 6 regularly. Richards is a joke, just like Arneil was a joke, neither has any business running a hockey team on the bench at the NHL level. People were up in arms about Hitch being inconsistent with how he treated players, well these guys are clearly worse.

The bolded are veterans (Vermette is gone), all have more than 200 NHL/AHL games... they have earned top line duty on a very bad roster... for now.

The old Orioles manager Earl Weaver was a believer in young players apprenticing at the highest level. If a young pitcher made the team out of camp, he automatically went into long relief. Several guys who anchored the rotation would have a first year record of something like 3-7, but they were getting innings and getting their feet wet. And since their high-level stamina and maintenance of skill was a major question mark, it also gave them a test without doing the medieval witch test. It must have worked, since the Orioles started losing a lot of talent when free agency began, and they plugged an apprenticed young player right in and never missed a beat.
Any competitive young player is going to do everything he can to get into the lineup. So if he's not playing, he's studying and learning without running the risk of costing his team on the ice. He's seeing what it takes to play in the NHL. And if he's competitive, he's going to do what he can, rather than take it personally and complain to anyone who will listen.
