So, to sum up, Washington's existing culture is ****ed up enough that any possible question marks should be out of the question. You might as well blow it up if the foundation is that unstable.
Jokinen's rep is that of a guy who kicked his drinking problem and reinvented himself as a physical, consistent, defensive center who still puts up 50+ points.
Frankly, he could teach our party boy losers a lot about professional dedication.
some of the post panthers teams were expected to be contenders upon his arrival and missed the playoffs. calgary and the rangers.
as to jokinen's locker room problems...google jokinen drinking problem and you will see part of his problem. he was a binge drinking alcoholic. not that playing for the panthers wouldnt do that to a guy, but thats part of it. apparantly its in the past, good on him, but its part of his rep now
Ok, so if Jokinen's locker room problems were tied to his drinking, and he's no longer drinking, what would that indicate about his locker room problems now?

He's never been on a winner and there's no winningness for him to pick up here? Shrug.
He'd at least probably not be in a position to command a whole lot of term.

Ha, there's probably a better chance they knock him right back off the wagon.
But I suppose I prefer things that may actually happen
That is my issue with so many of the things that are posted on these threads, there just is almost no chance whatsoever of them actually happening.
Sure they 'could' turnover a large portion of the team and sign the 2 biggest named UFA's on the market but there is no chance in hell that actually happens.

You don't think it's realistic that a team severely lacking in high end depth and suffering from a major public image issue would look to make a splash in free agency?
Just for fun. Not my ideal, but what I think is likely (assuming we can't dump bad contracts and Kuznetsov stays in KHL):

I don't think there is any way whatsoever that the Caps sign both Suter and Parise. None. Zero.
It isn't McPhee's way and if McPhee isn't making the call then the new guy isn't going to just come in and sling money around willy nilly, as Mr. Rouse said.
Could I see the Caps possibly being a likely 2nd tiered destination for one of those guys? Sure but I can't see the Caps throwing enough money at them to make them turn their back on one of their 1st tiered teams.
Like I said before if the Caps and Flyers each offer $7.5 mil per they are going to the Flyers. And the Caps aren't going to offer enough more to entice them choose them instead.
New version of BCF's roster minus Schultz, plus cap space and filled out using that cap space:

The only potential weakness I see on that roster is the fit of MP as a 3C.
I like that lineup, minus Jokkinen, but then again centers aren't that easy to get.

i actually have said nothing about his locker room issues. i threw that your way when you asked about it.
his career as a loser is enough for me to stay clear. his time with the flames and then ranger and then return to calgary have been filled with a team that regressed and underperformed expectations.
if the caps are going to commit to a player of his salary level, i'd prefer a documented winner as a opposed to a loser. the capitals are historical losers. they need more influence that pushes that back than compounds it.
i have consistantly said that and getting tomas vokoun has only hardened my feelings in that regard.
I like it but I can't see GMGM msking moves that would give us six new guys in our lineup.
Only 5 since Kuznetsov is already in the system. We had 4 this year, so 5 shouldn't be too big of a change considering 3 off the new roster players would be bottom 6ers who shouldn't cost more than 1.5mil.
When will you guys understand that if you put Kuznetsov as a #1 center you'll be first screaming "get rid of him" after few games? He isn't great at center, mediocre defensively (I didn't say bad), pretty awful in faceoffs.

This. For whatever reason, Oli just isn't a winner. That is the exact opposite of what this roster needs immediately.
