Getting off topic but I didn't want him traded, not at all; now however, after seeing the results I'm glad we did... (and we still have a pick to play with too).
Now can it be just anyone that gets top line minutes or do they have to play with legitimate first line players?
I.E would a first line consisting of Gillies-Boll-Chimera automatically be a good first line since they're finally getting the minutes they needed to succeed? Or are you saying you can plug anyone into a first line as long as there's a star or two on it already?
I'm not claiming Blake, Stajan, Ponikarovski etc. are legitimate 1st liners. I'm saying someone on every team is going to score. Whomever gets the first line minutes, and power play time is going to score. If they aren't legitimate 1st liners, it contributes to the problems the team will have competing. Just look at the CBJ, especially the early years. Players scored; how many were bona fide top 6 players?

That makes much more sense now. It originally sounded to me like you were postulating that it doesn't matter who plays on the first line.

I didn't want the original Carter trade. I wanted Howson to get JMFJ or Burns or any other legitimate youngish defenseman to shore up the blue line. I thought trading for Carter was foolish at that time.
sooooo..... 6 goals in two games and, what, 9 goals in the 37 others?
That's the problem when scoring is used as the point of interest. This would imply that his effort in 2 games was incredible and the other 37 not so much. Clearly that isn't the case but if you watch the games with Mr. Carter you'll see there is a wide range of effort on display. From none to a lot. Not unlike many other players.
Anyone have the subscription to be able to read the Custance ESPN article?
This sounds like two questions: One: Does anyone subscribe, and two, who among us can read?
Seriously, I was thinking the same thing. While it is against HB policy to post the article for us to read (I got called on the carpet once for asking) I would appreciate it if someone could summarize the salient points for discussion.

If it's the ESPN Insider subscription, I would be surprised if we were allowed to post the article. That's a paid service. I think the proper term would be stealing.
Wow didn't know he had any role with the Blue Jackets.
How could you not? We are, after all, the center of the hockey universe. Well, for a few weeks. In the off season, until Nash is traded. And then briefly for the All-Star game. Sort of.

You are correct, that would be stealing. But I think it might be okay to post a synopsis for discussion. But then again, maybe not. I am not a mod and do not play one in real life.

I think you grabbed the wrong quote. I don't know. I had insider for a while a long time ago, for some perks with fantasy sports. But found it less than useful. I'm surprised it still exists.
I agree that it may be posturing, but that's exactly how this should be played. As long as Rick is willing to stay quiet and let things play out, this is how the team can maximize the return. And if he's truly willing to stay? All the better for the ultimate trade value, because they really can stick to getting the best possible return without being forced to accept less.

The bolded part. Howson's taken the brunt of punishment from the fans for this debacle and remained relatively silent to the direct criticisms, except for this Nash thing. Howson could have stayed tight lipped, taken the lumps for the concieved notion that the organization wanted to move Nash and all this would have died down considerably once the playoffs started. With the offseason would have come a little renewed fervor for it, but simply staying mum would have caused this situation to continue to get less and less press and eventually, a big deal could have been made.
Howson either decided he'd had enough of the backlash against him personally for this, or Nash's camp was threatening to go public. I've said it before, Resnick's comments on the Saturday night before the deadline when he said that non-movement of Nash on or by Monday wouldn't necessarily facilitate Nash's "list" of accepted teams to get any bigger were a last ditch attempt to get Nash moved by the deadline.
Yes, Nash, personally, has at least handled this as well as can be expected, but for how long?

From what I heard from someone that works for the jackets, that they were getting hammered by season ticket holders calling in stating they were not going to renew if we traded Nash away. Makes sense to me, and wouldnt be suprised if Nash agreed to say it was him that wanted the trade, to take some of the heat off the orginization. It will be interesting to see what happens going forward , it doesnt look like Howson will be replaced, as Patrick was brought in almost in a mentor role, but also as a pure hockey mind in the front office. They have made pretty solid decisions as a tandem, and I dont expect that Mac will change directions since they brought in Patrick. I would be fine with this, I just want to see priest gone for sure. Wish Palinka would chime in a little more as to what priest role has really been the past couple years.

Where to begin.
This seems to be based on assumption after assumption. For one, I'm not sure we can say there have been enough decisions as a "tandem" to really judge Howson/Patrick as a pair.
And you could just as easily believe that Patrick was brought in to succeed Howson as be his mentor. There isn't any real evidence for either.
The thing I'd most like to ask Palinka is why Jack Johnson suddenly is okay with playing for Columbus when he signed in LA because he didn't want to be traded here.
So as I was purusing sports pages today, something stuck out to me. My biggest fear with this Nash situation isn't that whoever ends up being the one to pull the trigger on the deal getting shafted into taking less than value, its that my eyes are drawn to the Dwight Howard situation in Orlando and I fear that certain aspects of it could become the future if Nash is here beyond this coming offseason.
For anybody that doesn't know what I'm talking about, (I'm not an NBA guy by any stretch either) Dwight Howard is , for all intents and purposes, the franchise player of the Orlando Magic. He has a chance to opt out of his deal after this season and become a FA. Dwight has been flaky on if he wants to remain in Orlando, and he's been more and more vocal, often contradicting himself. This puts Magic management in a difficult situation of trying to trade a guy that doesn't want the team he'd be going to to have to sacrifice too much in a deal with Orlando and risk gutting a team that could be one player away (him) from making a title run. Orlando is now if trouble because if they can't deal him and he opts out, they are left with nothing.
Dwight has been, up until the last year or so, a model NBA'er. He's never been in trouble (as far as I know) and he's been a difference maker with Orlando, as they've made deep runs in the playoffs with him as their centerpiece. Dwight was also one of the most outspoken of the current NBA'ers regarding LeBron's "Decision" a few offseasons ago.
The NBA trade deadline is tomorrow and it will be interesting to see what happens with the Dwight Howard situation.
While I understand Nash has no "opt out" clause (or if there even allowed under the NHL CBA), my fear is that unless Nash is moved this offseason, this situation could get messy with the fanbase next season if Nash starts talking about this more than he already has. So far, the reaction has been mostly positive (We feel Nash's pain) but at some point its going to be like a lingering odor in the air if its not dealt with sooner rather than later.
