Is it fair to say now that we can add the hunwick for cohen trade to the win column for the sherminator?
Heck he helped the avs tank last year to get landy with some horrible(by being asked to do more than he is capable of) and he is a big part of the recent successful run from the avs and also allowed the team to trade quincey for downie by being a great team 1st depth guy.
Players like Hunwick should get a ton of credit, they get scratched time and again, but instead of complaining or making comments (Quincey) he trains, works hard, and plays a solid game. There are players like Hunwick on every team and when they do well and make a difference it does so much for the team chemistry. Hope he keeps it up.
Havent called him Hunsuck in awhile hes really playing some good hockey. Prolly good enough for him to earn another contract here or somehwere else. The ice time is a little bothersome from last nights game but he played well I just dont want Sacco overplaying him and thus putting him in a position to fail. Ideally I want Johnson to lead us in ice time every night.
I think if we want to resign Hunwick, we're going to have to work on him to convince him that he'll get playing time. I'm sure on a few teams that he'd be a 5/6, especially teams looking for a puck mover. I agree, let Elliot/Barrie refine their game in the AHL a bit more.
If Hunwick can continue to play like he has, I wouldn't mind him back for another year as our bottom pairing dman. He has been one our better dmen of late, and you can tell the hard work has really paid off and made a difference in his game this year. Plus the guy can just flat out skate, which is not a bad thing, he has made some great plays this season just because of his wheels.

It would be more professional to allow him to test the market than try to lock him up for another season.
He isn't a lock to be a top 6 defender and we've got some great prospects in the pipeline.
Over the summer Elliott, Barrie or Gaunce could challenge for a roster spot. We could sign a Suter or Wideman to boost our defense if need be and we could bring back O'Brien, re-sign Wilson, etc.
I see no reason to treat Hunwick like Porter since Hunwick clearly has been a great teammate and professional about his situation, stepping up and playing when given icetime, versus Porter's rumored disgruntled nature.
For 1 year under 2mil? Sure I'd use him as a 6th/7th, but I suspect he will want 2 years if he can get it to try and re-establish himself as a NHL defender.
I wish him luck--the guy has basically saved his own NHL career--but even with his stellar play down the stretch here I think it'll be time to move on. Like someone else said, we have prospects knocking on the door and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Avs try and make a move via trade/free agency to improve the defense significantly.
That said, this time around if he's re-upped I won't scream bloody murder. If he becomes available, if Stan Bowman has half a brain, he'll sign the guy post-haste. My prediction is if he hits the market he will end up in Calgary. Just seems like a guy they would like.

Dear God no.
As for Hunny, I always liked him, he seems like a great guy and I wish him all the best no matter if he stays or leaves.
Depends what he might cost, I didn't say definitely sign him.
I've been against long term deals for awhile now, so if he's looking for his last big contract then let him go to NYI or someone.
He's going to cost a lot, but that's not my main problem with him, IMHO he's the worst defensman (at least when it comes to d-man that are considered to be clear cut NHLers) in his own zone in the entire NHL.
