He is a UFA. Why would he want to stay with a team that had him scratched for the majority of the season?

So you're assuming that's as good as they'll ever play?

And all credit to the guy and his stellar attitude about the entire situation this year, but we're still talking about a small sample size of games. His play has been solid when the Avs have needed it the most, but that does not completely negate the much larger sample size of games he played in last season. Sorry, it's just plain silly to completely ignore how supremely awful he was last season, no matter how well he's played this year.

Much as I agree the kids need more seasoning, I would urge the Avs to look at all possible avenues to improve the D. Re-signing Hunwick is not the no-brainer you're suggesting here. I'll be fine with it if it happens of course, but not exactly thrilled either.

He has even earned his way up to playing with Johnson on the top pair.....

Not sure how I feel about that, as O'Brien has also looked very good with Johnson and gives EJ a more stable partner defensively...but if it can be made to work?

Hunwick had a bit of a brutal game tonight regarding some funky plays, but I don't know if I blame that on him completely, few bad bounces.

He lead all Avs in ice time and was a -1 with no goals/points.

I like what we are seeing from him alot, but I also hope that Sacco tempers blind trust and remembers that Hunwick has defects to his game.

Play him with Wilson and play that pair along with O'Brien-Johnson when you need a goal. Play more of Hejda-O'Bryne and O'Brien-Johnson when you need defensive work.

Balance and matchups need to be worked out by the coaching staff to make sure the right guys play the right minutes, not just the most minutes.

I think O'Brien stifles EJ offensively. Hejda-EJ is probably the way to go if Hejda is told to contain himself in a defensive role. No matter who you partner with EJ, the defensive partner will bring down EJ because we don't have a true #2. This is an obvious fact. I would be hesitant to rate anyone besides EJ and Hejda as top-4 defensemen, honestly; they all have their moments but become exposed -- I would say Wilson fits best but even then is ideal on the bottom pairing.

O'Brien is anything but stable. Johnson can't pinch offensively because he never knows where O'Brien is. The guy just does whatever he wants out there and is often out of position.

We need to find EJ a partner. I'd go with Wilson the rest of the year, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I thought Hunny played very well tonight. Yes, he did have that flukey goal off of his stick, but I believe he made up for it with his SOUND D late in the game leading into overtime. He was everywhere.

Did you not see how bad EJ and Hejda were to start the year?

Granted, both guys have improved and settled in...but man, they were brutal together. I don't disagree that, on paper, the two seem a natural pair..and I think Hejda was signed for that specific reason....but the results were puke bad.

The results were inconsistent. EJ started off poorly - regardless of Hejda's play - and then Hejda regressed severely. Currently both are close to their peaks, they deserve another shot. One of Hejda's mistakes was jumping into the play too much, it is no coincidence that his recent long stretch of defensive stability has also coincided with him being more defensively oriented.

That said, if Hejda was not an option then I'd like Wilson in his place.

I think Hunwick has deserved to stay with Avs at least until the end of the next season. Right now he seems to be what Johnson is supposed to be. Are you absolutely sure they haven't exchanged jerseys?

He almost got tripped up by Bickel's stick. He did a great job staying on his feet.

Hate to bump this again, but Hunny had an assist on the game winner and played great. I love this guy.

Was the main reason why we scored in OT, with that nice end-to-end rush.

So with the appearance of Hunwick stepping up his game, how does next year D-Core look?

EJ - Hunwick
Hedja - O'bryne
Wilson - O'Brien
Elliot/Barrie/Gaunce?

If we sign a FA like Carle or Garrison I can see Hunwick not getting offered a contract.
