Since the other one got locked. The assumption that Brendan Smith is gonna jump in next year and adequately replace Brad Stuart presence in the top 4 is laughable. Stuart has been so good the past two years. There will be a learning curve for Smith and he's gonna make a ton of mistakes.
I don't know who else was available and what the asking price was. No ones doing the Wings any favors. I wouldn't have given up a first for Gaustad though.
I'm curious. For all those questioning Holland, what would you have done?
well as of course you put him on your top line with Nick Lidstrom then you have a good plus minus and he learns from the best. only half sarcasm because he would learn a lot but still 3rd paring and some power play time is the best way to go and by that i mean from now on, not the start of this season as his game has improved a lot in GR

The plan seems to be for Quincey to replace Stuart.
Should have put an image of the burning truck from the Nascar race. This did make me laugh though.
In any event KB, Downey takes dumb penalties and is a walking suspension waiting to happen. Plus you have to believe ole Stevie let Ken Holland know what his contractual demands were. Quincey at least seems committed to his return happy to be back and might sign for a little less (or more) than he was demanding in Colorado, his fiance is from the state.
It also is pretty funny you want to discount the planning for players to leave angle, since you say it is his lack of forward thinking that constantly sticks us with terrible veterans. He goes out and gets a younger player we control and suddenly it is the wrong young player. A bottom six winger is what Downey is on a good team we don't need those, if he was a center I would listen and then tell you the first part of my statement again. But at least he would bring values we need to the table as a fourth line center, he does not.

Hard to believe Holland would believe such a thing.
My guess is that the plan is that Ericsson assumes the role of PK warrior. Quincey will suit up with Kronner or Lidstrom on a pick possession line.
I don't know what the big deal with Hemsky was. For a fan base that *****es about goal scoring so much. Hemky's career high is a very Hudler like 23. It's pretty obvious by now that had he been traded it would've been for a crazy haul since the Oilers valued him enough to pay him 5 million a year It's pretty obvious were not on Nash's "list." But if he was I'd package Flip, another young roster players picks and a couple high end prospects. Cause guess what? Flip's gonna want some of that Hemsky money.
I'm trying to figure out who is panicking? Maybe the odd poster, but for the most part the debate (at least from my perspective) is whether Holland has done enough from last offseason up till now. Is Detroit better? That's the question. There was nothing Holland could have done realistically today to make Detroit appreciably faster, tougher or more skilled. This team is what it is, and IMO it's not enough to contend.

The fact that Ken Holland did not commit huge portions of the cap on long-term deals to players who were clearly not worth it (i.e. most of last year's UFA class) is going to look really good when the next CBA is negotiated and the upper limit gets dropped down.

Thank god we have two third pairing defenseman making $3M+ a year!

What is obvious about that with Nash? Reports are we would be interested at the draft. By the way he might be pretty hacked off at the Jackets for throwing him under the bus today. Imagine if his list just shrunk to New York (place he supposedly really wants to go, grain of salt every player apparently says this) Chicago and Detroit. New York won't pony up the package because they just aren't going to part with the assets Columbus wants, he can stick to them by just listing division teams to try working with. Heck he can include Toronto, they don't have the pieces either. If he drops San Jose they are in trouble.
We have no idea what his actual list is, but it supposedly five teams and LA and Philly have both been reported no goes. Curiously we have heard an awful lot about the other teams on the list, except the two in division. Well Columbus is running out of options and LeBrun said the Wings would chase him in the off-season and never mentioned they were either off or on the list. I expect we will find out an awful lot more after the theatrical display by Howson today, even if he is fired I bet Nash is angry with the owners for allowing him to do it. That situation reached its expiration date as soon as he stepped to the microphone and decide to attempt backing over Rick Nash with the team bus.
