Zajac

Bolland
+ ?

I'm going to guess that Chicago has to add something. Not Saad or McNeill, but some value has to be added.

Zajac will be on his final year of his contract and with Henrique and Josefsson, the Devils have 2 Top6 Centers going forward. Bolland gives them a great shutdown Center
Hawks get their #2 Center in Zajac and Krüger is out of the Top6 centering the 3rd Line

what has to be added and thoughts?

No reason for the Devils to downgrade their center depth, now that they finally have some depth. And Zajac is still the Devils best center. Henrique might be better offensively but is not really good at taking faceoff (neither is any other Devils center not named Zajac) and Travis is also the best center defensively and has great chemistry with Parise.

I would take Bolland and a 2nd in a heartbeat for Zajac but the rest of our board probably wouldn't.

I love Zajac and all but Bolland is the type of center I'd go to war with in the post season over Travis, hands down. He has alot of intangibles that can't be seen on the stat sheet and his feistiness (aka warrior attitude) is something you always need in the post season IMO.

With that said, if we are moving Zajac, it better be for a legit d-men instead of another center.

The only reason Zajac would be traded would be to upgrade for a elite #1 center or #1 defenseman (Keith, Doughty, Weber, etc.). I know that we would have to add in those cases, but thats the only reason we'd move him. We are confident with our center depth going forward with Zajac, Henrique, and Josefson as Elias will most likely move back to the wing eventually. With all 3 healthy, I see our center depth to be almost as good as a teams like PIT's (Obviously, not as good as PIT because of Crosby/Malkin, but in terms how all 3 centers could be #1 center in their prime on other teams, like J Staal).

Josefson hasn't established himself as a top 6 center yet and I don't know if we can continue to bank on a 36 year old Elias to play that role in the meantime.

Zajac is also our best defensive player and by far our best face-off guy. Not to mention with the potential of Parise leaving in the summer, swapping a 65 point center with a 45 point center is a considerable offensive difference.

While Bolland is one of the only guys I would consider an acceptable 'downgrade' to Zajac, I'll politely decline.

You think Henrique and Josefson have #1 centre potential?

Also, I don't think many people view J.Staal as a 1st line centre on a good team. A 2nd line centre? Absolutely.

And Zajac doesn't have those exact intangibles?

Zajac and Bolland are pretty similar players, except Zajac is better.

A curious idea just popped into my head

Zajac + Tallinder

for

Bolland + Hjalmarsson

Both teams upgrade in one area and get an adequate replacement in the other.

I'd do this trade.

Bolland has 2 more years on his contract, Zajac will be a UFA after next season. This is why I think this could happen (I know it won't happen )

As reluctant as I am to trade Zajac, I could go for something along these lines. Maybe a pick going back to NJ?

Bolland plays with a edge wich makes him elevate his game when it matters the most while Zajac has a choirboy attitude 24/7.

That's the main intangible I was talking about, should've been more specific.

I don't know that this trade helps either team to be honest. Bolland is a beast, but he's not the high end offensive center the devils need now that Henrique is cooling off. Zajac is a great 2nd line center but it just creates a huge hole because of how important Bolland is to the Hawks.

I don't see any reason for the Devils to trade Zajac for a downgrade at centre. Zajac's defence is elite, his faceoff skills are sorely needed, and I don't trust the offensive abilities of any of our other centres enough to lose him.
