Penner once fought Eric Butterbean Esch. He won by submission (Kimura) at the Bat Cave (Shaw Conference Centre Edmonton).

Here's an article
http://www.canada.com/edmontonjourna...7-f0a51c6025da

It also notes Penner as 6.4 and 260 for that fight.

It's retarded.

I watched an interview with a doctor regarding this matter and he had a great suggestion: Random weight tests at any time, that weight would then determine what weight class you fight at....I think he was saying something along the lines of cutting no more than 15 lbs, maximum.

This isn't a weight cutting competition and it will cost somebody their health some day.

While I totally agree, I've basically just come to accept that competitors in high-level sports are willing to take risks with their bodies. Baseball and football players with steriods, gymnasts and figure skaters with starving themselves.. if we tried to save the world it would never end.

I mean, its a sport where guys punch each other in the head and break each others bones. Add the health risks from dehydrating your body to the list.

I've learned to accept it also, it's just the extreme cases that worry me, Alves/Rumble/Tibau come to mind.

When they drain their body they are also draining the fluids in their brain & then getting punched in the head the following day. It's a recipe for disaster.

Is there any way his aneurism could be related/caused by his weight cutting?

That's a great idea. Same-day weigh ins won't fix the problem because you'll just have guys fighting dehydrated.

Having random weigh-ins just means guys are going to pull out of more fights. No thanks. Plus it gets a little too involved in their personal life between fights.

IMO they need to do something for the week of the fight. Weigh-ins are 5, 3, and 1 day prior to the fight and they have to be at a certain percentage over their weight limit each day so they aren't doing huge cuts in one or two days. Maybe it starts at 10% of their contract weight 5 days out, 5% 3 days out, and on weight 1 day out. Fine guys if they miss any of the weights. Any more than 5 days will be tough because guys often are only in town a week before the fight.

My thought was that the random weigh-ins should be done the week of the fight, but the problem with that is you might have guys dehydrating themselves the whole week. Your idea makes more sense.

Guess I should make some picks...

Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann (dec) -- As I mentioned I'm kind of back and forth on this one. I think Kampmann is the savvier of the two guys and his movement and counterpunching could give Alves a lot of trouble. I was also impressed by his wrestling in his last fight with Story, which is another thing that could work in his favour. Buuut the elephant in the room is still how he deals with getting hit. Alves is probably gonna connect solidly a few times and I'm not convinced that Kampmann is gonna cope with that well. I don't think he'll necessarily get blown out like he did vs. Daley but if he gets hit a few times and doesn't like it then me could spend a lot of the fight backing up, which could spell a loss by decision.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urush*tani (sub) -- I have to admit that I don't know a lot about Urush*tani, but from what I read he's primarily a quick striker with good movement. I don't think that'll be enough to overcome what I assume will be a big wrestling advantage for Benavidez. Wouldn't be surprised if he latches on to one of his nasty guillotines for the finish. The X-factor is how well Benavidez handles the cut, I thought he looked the most drawn-out of the four guys who weighed in yesterday.

Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall (dec) - McCall's another guy I don't know a ton about, but he sounds pretty legit so I expect a close fight. Gotta go with the guy I know here though.

Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou (dec) - This one is kinda tough to call. Philippou had a pretty impressive fast KO in his last fight and McGee is a bit of a slow starter so that could work against him. But he's also been pretty resilient in his past fights and come on strong in the later rounds. I'm picking Philippou but it's kind of a hunch and I can see things going either way.

Aaron Rosa vs. James Te Huna (KO)
Nick Penner vs. Anthony Perosh (sub)
Cole Miller vs. Steven Siler (sub)
Andrew Craig vs. Kyle Noke (dec)
Jake Hecht vs. T.J. Waldburger (TKO)
Daniel Pineda vs. Mackens Semerzier (dec)
Shawn Jordan vs. Oli Thompson (KO)
