No way does briere become captain..also, if Timonen gets the C next year but then gets injured (he is pretty old and banged up at this point) we'd be without a captain for another year!
Making G the captain is a risk, but this kid really cant be compared to Richards ascension to captaincy..Giroux has talent that puts him in a league waaay over Richie

(No offense to mike)
That's kind of silly to worry about. Giroux could also get injured. So could Briere. So could Pronger if he comes back. You should give the C to the best leader IMO. Everything else is irrelevant. If that is Giroux, then give him the C. If that is Timonen, give it to him (even if he is an "injury risk"). If it is someone else, give it to them.
I love that our young superstar was the one in Kronwall's ear last night for a couple skates the length of the ice after the hit. Then he came out and tried to answer with a huge hit. Shouldn't go overlooked. Not sure he gets the C before Kimmo...but after Kimmo retires, it's a no brainer.
If Pronger IS done, Kimmo gets it. After him, I agree G should get it. He's passionate, cluey and has the aura of a future skipper about him. I know some have mentioned Briere and Hartsy as candidates, but I don't see it. Both are perfectly fine as lieutenants, but they don't have that "je ne sais quoi" that defines a true leader to me.
In every episode of the road to the winter classic show, it seemed like Giroux is the most vocal leader in the locker room, on the bench, on the ice and when training, this with Pronger away of course but that's exactly the situation we're talking about. With Pronger away, who seems to be the leader? Giroux...
Timo leads by example, but seemed to be a really quiet guy both on-ice and off-ice. Briere also seemed to be a guy the team turned to, but he also seemed much more quiet than Giroux, but differing from Timo he spoke up on occasion. Briere, however, doesn't lead by example and I don't like the prospect of having a captain who only gives it his all come post-season. Jagr also seemed like one of the team's leaders, someone the guys turned to, but he seemed to lead one player at a time, never seemed to be the focus of the group (except the coach of course). Actually the most vocal leader except #28 seemed to be Hartnell, and when adressing the group Laviolette often seemed to do it by adressing Scottie, Briere or Giroux by name. Mostly Scottie and G. Like an extension of his own coaching, he seemed to use his leading players. A lot of coaches do that. And the player best for reaching the group, should be captain.
I think that's Claude Giroux. The focus of the group, seemed to be Giroux, what Giroux did, and what Giroux said.

I'd seriously sit him down and ask him if he wants the C with regarding if it can be too much and may disturb this mojo or whatever he's been on this year. Like gagne, was the captain, was asked several times to dawn the C but declined it because he was comfortable with an A with less media/etc written down responsibilities
I still think it should go to Kimmo as long as he is here. Giroux should be captain some day, but as long as Kimmo is here I think he should get the C. Then again, I am not in that locker room. If G is the man for the job, then stitch that C on his jersey.

I disagree. if Pronger cannot play again, I think there's little chance that anyone else but G would be the organizations first choice. That said, i think they would sit him down and ask him what he thinks about it before doing so. I don't think they want what happened to Richie to happen to G, but G seems to flourish in the spotlight as opposed to richie, who seemed to be annoyed by the spotlight. So, i don't think i'd be too worried about that.

I don't know, I feel like that would almost be disrespecting Timonen. I thought he would be named captain for sure before Richards was. Then I thought there was a shot he'd get it when Richards was dealt, but Pronger was clearly the right choice there. This is not a shot at Giroux at all, and I don't doubt his leadership abilities, but from an outsider's view (meaning not in the Flyers locker room on a daily basis) it looks like Timonen is the leader of the team and has been since Pronger went down. Giving it to Timonen in what very well could be his last year in Philly (or the NHL) would be a nice setup leading in to Giroux getting the C when Timonen leaves. I don't think Giroux not getting the C would have a negative impact on him or the team and Timonen seems like he is already a pretty great leader. But again, like I said, I am not in that locker room so if Giroux really is the leader in there then get out your sewing machine, Lavy, and give him that C.
