Olver has huge night

Olver had a hat trick and an assist.

He has 4 goals and 5 assists for 9 points in 8 games. 7 points in the last 3 games. He is already a +15 on the season.

He had 33 points in 41 games last season at N. Michigan.

The important question is what level of competition he's facing. Northern Michigan is not exactly the hotbed of NCAA hockey. I wonder what his numbers would look like if he transfered to BU or Michigan.

Wow! Didn't he just score his first goal of the season in the last game, too?

He's wiped-up against...

Michigan Tech, twice (a now 1-6 team). He has had points in games against Notre Dame and Michigan State too. He's up against Ohio State this weekend, it'll be intereting to see how he does against them, and of course they have Michigan later in the season a couple times. Northern Michigan doesn't have a real easy schedule, being in Michigan's conference and all.

Northern Michigan is ranked 11th in the Nation and has actually been higher at times this year. They are going to have a tough time beating Michigan out of the top spot in the CCHA, but at this point they are the second ranked team in that league.

Even if it was a week league. His numbers are improving. Therefore, hes showing progress. If he can keep up a Point Per Game that would be a highly sucessful season in my eyes.

Wow! I thought that Northern Michigan was in a crappy league, not one of the better ones. So he's dominating top-tier talent. Not crap, like Jessiman was two years ago.

BTW, those rankings are from last week, so it's not including Friday and Saturday's games. So Northern Michigan could be higher this week. But, Dartmouth will be lower, since they got shut out by Princeton last night, and lost 3-0. God, they are playing horrible. And Princeton is a horrible team. So is Quinnipac. I hope that they come on strong, and will get an NCAA Tournament berth. It will give Jessiman some good big-game experience.

EDIT: I didn't see the thread below this, so I didn't think you guys knew about the Princeton loss. I didn't know about the injury, so if he got hurt early it could be a factor in the loss. I hope he gets back on the ice soon, and that it is not broken, or severly sprained or anything.

Princeton might be a terrible team, but they have a pretty good coach: Ken Hitchcock.

That's interesting. Is he the head coach?

Still, players have more of an effect on the game than the coach. And it's obvious that Dartmouth played like cr@p.

All this talk of conferences and standings we forget one very important point: Olver has a lot of offensive talent.

He's also running some beginner hockey classes down here in Philly that my wife has been attending...his commitment to Princeton though appears as if it might be fairly limited, it sounds like he will be working with a number of different teams.

He's floating, from what I hear...

I think he's been involved with the Trenton Thunder and he Phantoms too. The guy just wants to teach and cannot sit still. The lockout's driving him crazy.

Yeah, there was an article in The Hockey News about it.

Let's not get carried away with Olver's scoring exploits against Michigan Tech. That's the non-conference team he scored 6 points against in 2 games this past weekend. In his other 6 games he has 3 points (1 assist against a good non-conference opponent, St. Cloud, and 2 assists against Michigan State). And I'll also mention that other than the points he scored against Michigan Tech, his other 3 points have been powerplay assists.

Olver needs to beef up his even-strength scoring and do so against better competition for his numbers to matter.

Well, Michigan Tech may be non-conference, but the conference they play in is the WCHA, which is a better conference. It's not like NMU is going to Atlantic Hockey or somesuch to find patsies. (Outside of the Michigan schools, the CCHA isn't that great shakes of a conference anyway.)

If you'd look at Olver's stats for last season you'd see that he didn't do much scoring against the tougher CCHA conference competition last season either.
